Central air

Finally had my a/c looked at so that I could set the thermostat for Random when I'm gone. The unit has a bad compressor, and has to be replaced. $2500.

Ouch.

Well, at least I have the money, but that will take a chunk out of savings.

Ouch.

Well, at least it'll be an energy-efficient unit.

Ouch.

Mom, I'm glad I'll be mooching off you your guest next week-;)

The good news

The a/c guy said that the unit costs only 26 cents per hour to operate. Not too bad.

I also got a programmable thermostat, which should help with the cost.

Okay, I promise that I'll stop talking about the a/c after this-;)

The a/c is nice. It cools the place down subtlely, without an arctic blast. (The big problem with my place is that it's frequently as hot or sometimes even hotter than it is outside. I've never figured out why, except that it's a western-southern exposure with no shade, and it's upstairs.)

Now if I could just remember how to set the (digital) thermostat to 80-;) I'll probably set it to 90 while I'm gone. When the place gets hotter than that, Random gets pretty miserable.

I have to hand it to the guys who installed it. My condo complex, in its endless quest for esthetics, built a lattice around the unit (it's outside) to hide the unit. The lattice does not move and does not open. (There's planning.) They had to work around it to remove the old unit and put the new one in.

They also threw in a new air filter and cleaned out the duct for free-;)

For the locals: The company is called Day and Night heating and cooling. I highly recommend them.

I have to remember to make a note of the appliances that I've replaced and when so that I can tell a real estate agent about them when and if I sell this place.
