A little more optimistic....
I brought Harlee in to visit with Nima. I learned some things from the visit. Nima kept staring at Harlee the whole time. My understanding is that staring is an aggressive gesture for a cat, so that might help explain Random's reaction to her. Mostly Harlee and Nima got along well, but Nima hissed at Harlee once. Perhaps she's hissed at Random as well. (I've never heard Harlee hiss.) Harlee seemed unnerved the whole time, though I don't know if she was unnerved by Nima, by the room, or both. She started to go under the couch, and that's when I somehow got her out of the room while keeping Nima in and Random out. (Pats self on back a little.)
OMG...This just in: Nima's near the door (based on Harlee sniffing at the door and sticking her paws under it), and Random isn't hissing! There might be hope. Maybe I'll put up the gates sometime this weekend and see what happens. Right now, Nima is scratching at the door and flinging herself against the door. Harlee and Random are fascinated.
Anyway, I thought of two ways to improve the situation. I'm going to get Random a set of Soft Paws. They're a covering for a cat's claws that keeps the claws from damaging anything. He could still bite, but if Nima can use her claws and he can't, any fight between them would be more even. I also plan to get a cat tree so that Nima would have a place to get away from Random if he's chasing her. Random is not a climber. I've seen cat trees for less-than-retail price on eBay, so that's a place to try.
Harlee is a clever cat. First, she discovered the joys of unrolling the toilet paper roll. However, she then somehow tore off the paper and brought it over to the litter box.(!) Yes Harlee, I'll clean the litter box tonight.
I'm really happy with my little brood. My home seems very warm and full.
