The problem for me with trying to match journal with audience is actually two-fold. First, I'd probably forget which one I was writing for. Second, I'd end up not being able to decide which one fit the entry, so I'd have to post all or most of the entry in more than one journal, which is too much work. I'm sure I started out with three, but I've already forgotten the third ;)

I have a somewhat similar problem between my site journal and Livejournal. Livejournal links to my site, but my site has never mentioned Livejournal. That's just the way it's turned out, and since most of my writing now takes place on Livejournal, I think it's time to give the site isolation some serious thought.

So far, the site has mostly been for longer topics, and the "audience" is mostly old friends and family, but I really don't see any reason they can't read LJ as well. I was going to get a new host for my site and was going to rethink things then, but the new host has been down for several months so it's not looking very good at the moment. Hmmmmm....
