I had some weirdness getting out of my TIAA-CREF also. One of my funds with them was such that you can only get $1000 per year out for some reason, so I've been getting these yearly disbursements into my newer IRA for the past 5 or 6 years. I almost regret doing it because my TIAA account had way more growth than my newer one has.
