Thirteen Days
Jan. 20th, 2001 03:49 amI wanted to see someone have a more difficult week than I just had, so I saw Thirteen Days, the movie about the Cuban Missile Crisis. I can see why the movie is getting poor reviews--it's not very well acted--but the story, excuse me, the history is very compelling. It begs the question of what "defense" means. I didn't quite realize how close I came to not being born. (I was born in November, 1962, which was shortly after the Crisis.) I found myself muttering a few choice expletives each time the situation escalated. Watching it was scary enough even knowing the outcome. I can't imagine what not knowing the outcome would have been like. I was moved by the "...men (ahem) of good will..." quote.
It's definitely worth seeing when it goes to video, and might be worth seeing in the theaters if you're a history buff. One added benefit is that it has a low teenage interest factor.
