Austin is a city of trees. Some of the landscaping, too, has an overgrown feel to it. (My fountain grass would be right at home.) The overall effect is a little mysterious. I like it.
The place that Austin is reminding me of the most is Columbus, Ohio: lots of red brick and limestone, lots of trees, and a river.
I walked a tremendous amount today. First, I ran across the street to mail some bills that I forgot to mail before I left San Jose. (I know how to have a wild time, don't I?) Then I walked over to a transit center where I scored a bus map of Austin with schedules (1 block up and about 4 blocks over). Then I walked up to the state capitol (4 more blocks up). Who'd have thought that Texas would have a pink capitol building? Then I walked over to the University of Texas (4 blocks over and 8 blocks up). Then I walked around campus for a while, got something to eat, and headed back (13 blocks down). When I got back to the hotel, I decided that I was a glutton for punishment, so I walked down to the river, crossed it, and came back (12 blocks round trip plus the length of the bridge).
The traffic was very, very aggressive. I had to stare some people down to let me cross, and one person rolled forward toward me (to scare me?)
I'm pooped. I'm going to take a nap and then head back out.
Originally, I had planned to rent a car tomorrow and explore North Austin. However, there are buses that run up there. I'd probably see more from a bus than if I was driving. It's also cheaper and less hassle. On the other hand, the only way that I'll get a feel for driving in Austin is to drive in Austin. Not sure what to do.
