I don't want to jinx myself by saying that I have two companies interested in me for a technical writing position, but at least I've made past the first interview. The first job was for mainframe software, which left me scrambling to remember my mainframe experience. The first phone interview, with the hiring manager, was low-key and went well. The hiring manager wanted me to talk to the team leader on the phone later that day. The team leader really drilled down on my experience. I felt like I was saying "I don't know" a lot, but at the end, he asked if it sounded like a job that I would like. I said "Yes!" He said that they wanted to bring me in for a face-to-face interview, but they weren't sure if I should come into the local office (in San Mateo) or go down to L.A. (The hiring manager is in L.A.) I thought, "Whoa. If they're considering flying me down to L.A., they must be serious." He said that they'd be in touch early next week.

I don't get why it's feast or famine for these jobs. After I set up the phone interview at the first (mainframe) place, another company that makes multimedia software wanted to set up a face-to-face interview at the exact same time as the phone interview. After I told them that I was busy, they set the interview for this morning. I think that it went okay, although the interviewer was tougher to read than the ones at the other company. However, the multimedia company (I'm trying not to use the companies' names in case I wind up working for one of them!) asked me to have a phone interview with a marketing manager in Taiwan on Sunday night. So that sounds promising....

The only other exciting news is that I got a flu shot. Yes, I'm living a dangerous life -;)
