I'm baffled

It's the party of "less government interference in our everyday lives". Okay, fine.
But it's the party that strongly opposes abortion rights and gay marriage. Isn't that government interference?
Can someone explain this to me?
It wouldn't surprise me if the Republican party split into a Libertarian party and a social conservative party if it isn't already happening.
