Cat thoughts
Feb. 20th, 2011 07:42 pmI've been worried about how Harlee would take Nima's passing. She loves other cats, and she's never lived without at least one other cat. However, she actually seems calmer since Nima has been gone. She's very sensitive to emotions, and she's probably been picking up stress from Nima, me, and my mom. I've been paying lots of attention to her, so she probably thinks that this isn't all bad.
However, I would like to get a companion for her. Oddly enough, when I was running to PetSmart every other day to get food to tempt Nima, I was visiting one of the cats in their adoption area. Her shelter name is Dash. She's a striking girl; her base color is dark grey like a Russian Blue, but she's a dilute tortoiseshell, and she has some orange mixed in that looks almost pink. (There's a picture of her at http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/14964837 but it doesn't do her justice.) She's very friendly. She came up to me and tried to sniff me the first time I saw her there, but lately she's looked depressed and didn't get up. She's about two years old, which is still young, but old enough to not get into so much "kitten trouble". She's been fostered with three other cats, so she's used to living in a home and is used to other cats.
So I told my mom about Dash, and we went to go to see her yesterday after we went to the vet with Nima. Mom was really taken with Dash, to my surprise. (She was very attached to Nima, and is thinking about getting another tabby cat after I move out. I told her that we could look for a tabby now, but she said that I should adopt whomever I want.) Dash followed me when I went to look at the other cats. At one moment, I had three cats looking at me! They also had another cat, Knick, who's a calico with some tabby markings (http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/17572766). Her description said that she really likes to keep company with other cats, which would be good for Harlee, and is very social with humans. My mom would like a "lap cat," although I told her to be careful when she asks for. My late cat Chaos would keep jumping in my lap when I was working from home, and I'd put him on the floor, and he'd jump up again, etc. I'm amazed that I got any work done from home -;) Anyway, Knick is another possibility. She did hiss and swat at the other cat in the kennel with her, but it was her first day in the kennels, so she probably was really stressed. She also has been fostered.
My mom and I were thinking of names for Dash yesterday when we were in a restaurant, getting more and more silly. As for serious names, right now she's partial to "Smoke" and I'm partial to "Zara". (Edited to add: Aurora is another possibility.) We also talked about our memories of the cats that I've had. However, my first step is to get Harlee to the vet. She's behind on her shots (my bad). Harlee's impossible to get into the carrier, or at least she used to be. (I hope that she's slowing down as she gets older.) In California, I would lure Harlee into the carrier with food, and it always worked. However, she's been more jumpy since we moved to Michigan. (She doesn't entirely trust my mom even though we've lived her for quite a while.) So I might have to stuff her into a carrier. Oh joy. She moves really fast and is strong. I also need to make a copy of the statement for my inheritance money for the adoption application because I don't have a job. I also want to make a copy of some of Nima's vet bills, which were substantial, to show that I have money to spend on my cats. We'll see how this goes....
I miss Nima terribly. Poor girl. The life force in her was strong. On her last day, she even ate some food, but she was really, really weak. She didn't get a break.
In other exciting news, we're having a snowstorm with "thundersnow". The weather forecasters were making it sound like the Snowstorm of Doom last night, and my mom is feeling protective, so I got supplies at the store last night. Today and tomorrow, I have a boatload of homework, so I'm going to stay warm inside. I could do without it looking so bleak and cold though.
