Arts and Crafts
Feb. 8th, 2014 06:39 pmI planned to stay home today because it was supposed to snow. And it didn't, and didn't, and I thought about throwing myself together to go to the store, when it started. It stopped fairly quickly though. I'm still staying in today; I'm supposed to be doing homework. Ahem.
I'm interested in learning candlemaking. Some friends of my dad when I was growing up made candles. Pretty cool candles too; I kept one that they made with Zodiac signs for years. They were quasi-hippie people (although the father worked as a programmer with my dad). Along with the candlemaking, they made (rather nice) fish tanks. They had a huge fish called Oscar that fascinated me. And they had waterbeds, which also fascinated me. They moved to the Bay Area when I was still living in the Chicago area, and I don't know what happened to them.
Anyway, I thought about making candles to sell (although I know that I'll need practice to make anything good enough to sell). I also know no one gets rich selling candles on Etsy, but the idea is to have multiple streams of income and pick up some extra cash. Anyway, I was able to pick up some used books on candlemaking very cheaply on Amazon. Realistically, I won't have time to do much with it until after school ends. I'm also interested in making soap, but working with lye scares me.
I'd also like to learn how to sew. I have a sewing machine that I don't use. It's actually a quilting machine, but it might be usable for normal sewing as well. I'll have to look and see. Sewing would be a great craft to pick up because I generally know what I want in terms of clothes, and generally can't find what I want. There is a fabric store a couple of miles away that offers classes. I should check them out.
