My Favorite Fruits

ravengirl gave me a writing prompt of “your favorite fruit/veg and why”. My favorite fruits are tropical fruits, especially passion fruit and pineapple. When I was growing up, my family went to Hawaii every year for several years. If I have to pick a favorite place, Hawaii would be it. However, food is very expensive in Hawaii because of shipping costs, so we would get a hotel room with a kitchenette to cut down on costs a little. The one type of food that isn’t very expensive is fresh fruit grown in the islands. I would always insist that we had to get passion fruit juice, which I would drink like soda pop. We always would get a fresh pineapple (you haven’t really had pineapple until you eat it fresh). I think that we might have had fresh mangos too??

Our favorite place was Hana, on Maui. It's off the beaten track with a very scary, twisty road carved into a cliff, which keeps a lot of people out. When we were there, we would shop at Hasegawa's General Store (it amazes me that the name easily popped into my head, while I often go into a room and can't remember why I went in there!). It's crammed with everything that you might want to buy. Someone even wrote a song about the store.

I was in the grocery store the other day, and they had an “exotic” fruit aisle: pineapples, passion fruit, mangos, and kiwi fruit. I stood in the aisle and just inhaled the scent. I wish that I could bottle it. I didn’t actually buy any fruit because I don’t think that I could eat a whole pineapple by myself. I could have bought passion fruit, but I didn’t. I just looked online, and yes, you can buy passion fruit juice, but it’s expensive. It might be a good thing to buy, though, for the dead of winter to bring in a little “tropical sunshine” on a snowy day.
