Volunteer Work
Jan. 2nd, 2016 11:22 pmI woke up with a queasy stomach, but sucked it up because I had my orientation at the Humane Society today. The manager gave me a whirlwind tour of the facility and told me the tasks that I will be doing. I'll be working with the cats: cleaning their litter boxes and rooms, and feeding them. And folding laundry. (The place does a humongous amount of laundry. I gave them some detergent that I can no longer use because I have an HE machine.) It was a lot to absorb, but it's all tasks that I've done before. (I' m relieved that the manager is the only one who works in the isolation rooms though. There are kittens with ringworm in there, and I would really hate to bring THAT home with me.) I've been studying the listing of the cats online so that I can start to learn their names. I did take to two cats already. One is a senior calico cat named Chloe, who quietly lies in the corner and observes what's going on. Another is Miri, a small brown tabby cat who is small, like Nima, but has markings like Chaos. Very friendly. She's also a talker. I told my mom that she would be the perfect cat for my mom. (My mom has a thing for tabbies.) I doubt that they'd let someone from out of state adopt though.
I was looking at dog listings online and found the perfect dog for us. He's a senior dog who is laid-back and has lived with cats. And he likes to sleep in in the morning! But I have a lot of work to do here before I could adopt a dog. I've emptied three boxes in the kitchen and counting. I probably am going to read some tonight and go to sleep though, and try to shake off whatever bug that I have.
