A Bit of a Scare
Jan. 13th, 2016 10:58 pmWhen I came home last night, I found that Harlee had thrown up all over the place and was hiding under the futon. I coaxed her out and cleaned up the mess. I was freaked out, though, because 1) Harlee almost never throws up, and 2) a 14-year-old cat throwing up can mean serious problems. I wanted to see if she had any appetite, so I gave her a spoonful of expensive trout and lobster wet food. She glommed it. I gave her a little more, and she ate it and kept it down. Then I was stupid and gave her the rest of the can. She threw up.
I didn't think that I needed to take her to the emergency vet in Springfield or Bloomington, but I decided to call the vet in the morning. I tried to go to sleep, but couldn't sleep. I sent an e-mail to my boss explaining the situation, and telling her that I wanted to take 1/2 of a personal day to take Harlee to the vet, and that I'd come in in the evening. I still couldn't sleep. I finally got up, brought an extra blanket, one of my alarm clocks, and my cell phone into "Harlee's room," and tried to go to sleep on the futon. Harlee was happy, and I did fall asleep.
I overslept. I called the vet when I got up, and made an appointment to bring her over in the afternoon. The vet gave Harlee a complete physical, and while Harlee's showing signs of age, she's doing well. The vet said that she wasn't sure why Harlee was throwing up. The vet gave her an anti-nausea shot and some sub-Q fluids because Harlee was a little dehydrated. The vet told me to bring Harlee back if the vomiting continued. And then I took Harlee home and went into work.
Harlee has been eating and drinking with gusto tonight, and looks better than she did last night. I'm so glad. I know that I'll lose her sometime, but not quite yet. And I'm about to collapse and go to sleep a long time.
