Long Day

My boss contacted one of our database suppliers, and received a special link and user ID and password to enable users at our other campus or offsite to access those databases. So we have a temporary fix, but we aren't telling IT about it because we want them to keep working on the access problem. She thinks that the problem won't be fixed by the end of the semester, which is even more pessimistic than I am.

I talked to my boss about the e-resources conference, and she said that the CFO of the college sent an e-mail saying that the college was over budget, so everyone should stop spending. She commented to me that the library WASN'T over budget, but we have no choice but to comply. I'm glad that I already registered and booked my travel for the regional conference at which I'm presenting. She said that if the big library conference accepts my poster presentation, she would fight for me to get travel money to go present. So that's that. I put together a proposal today to go to the e-resources conference next year, and she put it with the materials that she's gathering for next year's budget proposal. I commented that the library conferences are always a the end of the fiscal year, so I'm wondering if we would always have issues. Yes, I'm a pessimist. Or a realist. It remains to be seen.

I was listening to an interesting audiobook on my way back from the other campus. It's a variant on Earl Nightingale's "You become what you think of all day long." It posits that you become what you believe yourself to me. People can get somewhat silly (IMO) about thinking only positive thoughts, but I do believe that our self-image impacts our lives. My self-image was completely rocked by my illness; it's frustrating knowing that there are things that I used to be able to do that I can no longer do. So I'm thinking of ways to ameliorate that. I think that I'll schedule time to think about work and personal problems to compensate for the fact that I can't think quickly on my feet. I'm also planning to take a public speaking class this summer. (It's in Lincoln, which is an easy way to start back up in school.) I also want to join Toastmasters when I can afford it. There's a group in Bloomington that meets on my day off.
