Well, yesterday wasn't quite so glitch-ridden, so I made it to LotR.
Wow.
I was so riveted that I didn't get up to use the washroom once--and I drank a large Diet Coke. (A somewhat outré measure, but a pretty good one.) I walked out grinning ear-to-ear.
I've never read the books, but I never felt lost at all. (I don't know what the reviews that said "if you haven't read the books, don't see it" were about. It follows the usual archetype of a quest story, with the wrinkle that the quest is to get rid of something rather than find something.) I've been debating whether to read the books or not, though I finally ordered them from Amazon. In some ways, I like not knowing what's going to happen.
It reminded me a lot of Star Wars. And comparing the "ring of power" to "the dark side of the force" made me wonder how much Lucas was influenced by Tolkien.
And the exchange that
intenselee partially quoted ("...the only choice we have is what we do with the time that has been given to us.") almost moved me to tears. It seemed strangely appropriate to September 11th and its aftermath, as well as other scenarios. Part of the reason that I'm up really late is that I was looking for a transcript of the whole exchange. Does anyone know if it is in the book? Otherwise, I'd be tempted to see the movie again and bring my minicassette recorder with me. Or, I suppose, wait until it's out on video, but I bet that will take a while.
Afterwards, I tried a 24-hour restaurant that I haven't been to before and isn't too horribly far away me. My weird coffee-shop karma is still going strong; a waiter and waitress got into an argument insisting that I was seated in the other one's section. (Me: I would just like to order....) The food was pretty decent though.
I've got to go to sleep.
Addendum: I kept thinking, though, that they should have just thrown the ring off the mountain or into the river. Guess I don't have the proper spirit....
