Like herding cats
Mar. 2nd, 2003 12:28 amHarlee has ear mites. (My vet cracks me up: she appeared at the door after looking at the slides and said "Congratulations! We have ear mites!) They're probably why Random got an ear infection and then the hematoma. This of course means that all three cats need to be treated for ear mites. At first, the vet was going to give them shots--and I was wondering when and how I'd get Nima to the vet for her shot before I left for L.A. on Tuesday--but the vet remembered that the Revolution flea treatment also works on ear mites. Much easier. The vet asked me to keep her posted as to how things were going; they really care about the pets that they treat.
Harlee, of course, was massively stressed the whole time, meowing nonstop from the time that I shut her in the carrier until a while after I let her out back home, and wasn't speaking to me for a while. She's bounced back quickly though. (Mom--she was in Random's cat carrier again tonight!)
I'm having another problem with the garage door. I opened the door for the first time since I painted the floor, and it stuck for a moment and then opened. When I close it now, the gears move for a while before they catch, and the door doesn't shut all the way. (I can shut it when I disengage the door opener.) Because the door is on its rails and isn't a hazard, I'm going to wait until next weekend to get it fixed. The floor needs another coat of paint, so I'm going to paint it tomorrow and let it dry while I'm gone. Then I should be done with the floor by the time that they fix it.
I love Borders (bookstore). It has an online feature that you can use to check whether a book is in stock at one of their stores and reserve the book. I used it to get some books to take with me on my trip, and the elapsed time at the store took about five minutes. The area in which the store is located is interesting too. It's in Santana Row, which is a new development that has been somewhat controversal in San Jose and that recently had a big fire. It was designed to look like the downtown of a small and apparently very upscale town. I liked it more than I thought that I would. It reminds me of Michigan Avenue in Chicago, only on a more intimate scale. I'd like to spend more time poking around there (and Borders!) when I have the time.
I came closer to hitting a cat yesterday while driving than I ever have. He ran in front of my car, and I slammed on the brakes, but I was going 50 MPH and didn't think that I could stop in time. I'm not sure how I managed to miss him. He made it across the other lane of traffic also. Hopefully he stayed on the other side. I hope he was a feral cat because, if not, I could cheerfully strangle his owner. Or dump him or her in the middle of the street under the same conditions. Maybe good karma from taking care of Random helped me to miss him. It's a nice thought, anyway.
