I reached my mom yesterday evening, when her power came back on. She was picking up her dog when the power went off, and it took her a couple of hours to get home. She was so jet-lagged from the trip that she kept on napping during the blackout, so that kind of worked out well.
Anyway...I bought a Honda Civic today. I loved the way the car handled and looked. (It's beige with pink and grey undertones. The interior is a light tan. Very elegant.) The only thing was that I had asked about the Civic Coupe, and they brought out a sedan, and I was so focused on how the car drove that the switch didn't quite register. (I'm probably the only person who could not notice.) I realized it when they were writing up the sale. They were really nice when I spoke up, hauled out a coupe in the same color for me, and insisted that I do a test drive on it as well. I liked it even better than the other car (not surprising because that's what I came there for). The price was good--not the lowest that it could possibly be, but I'm glad because the salesmen earned their money. I loaded it up with options. (I'd rather have a loaded Civic than a stripped-down Accord.) I'm really going to enjoy this car. They're currently installing the options, and it should be ready by next weekend. They offered to deliver it to me. It was a good buying experience; for the locals, I was at Larry Hopkins Honda in Sunnyvale.
The only problem was the Mazda. They talked to a wholesaler, who would offer only $100 for it. (Yes, I really do need a new car.) They recommended that I donate it to a charity instead, so that's what I'm going to do. So during the week, I need to find a charity that will take it. (Suggestions are welcome.) I'm going to start by seeing if the cat shelter from which I adopted Harlee and Nima will take it; the small amount of money that they'd get from it still would buy a lot of cat food. I hate the idea of the Mazda being scrapped, but I like the idea of it going to a good cause. Maybe this year, I'll deduct my charitable donations. (Usually I don't bother.)
