Planes, trains, and automobiles
Jan. 3rd, 2004 01:05 amWell, planes, more planes, and weather delays. The good news is that I'm back home. The kitties are okay, and Harlee is currently making a fuss over me. The plants are okay. (I used a vacation watering tool, and it seemed to work.) My luggage made it here okay, and the guitar is in one piece.
I got in three + hours late. When my flight in Detroit was scheduled to board, they announced a one-hour delay due to fog in Chicago. Okay, no big deal. I still would make my connection in Chicago. When the plane was due to board again, they announced another one-hour delay. If my connecting flight left on time, that would mean that I would miss it. They said that my connecting flight was delayed too, but if I missed it, there was another flight to San Jose at 6:30 Chicago time. That would work.
We finally boarded the plane two hours after it was originally scheduled. Then we sat on the tarmac for another hour. The fog had cleared, and we had been part of a chain reaction because of the original delay, but now the visibility was decreasing again. The pilot said that he didn't want to go back to the gate because he was afraid that they'd just cancel the flight. We finally did get off the ground. The pilot said that Chicago wanted to delay us another hour, but we were already on our way.
I assumed that I had missed my connecting flight, and in fact hoped that I had missed it so I wouldn't have to run for it. When we landed, I made a dash for the departure information--and saw that my connecting flight was still there, and due to depart in 15 minutes. The flight was way at the end of another terminal.
I decided that I had to try to make it, but refused to run. I barely made it. I was the last person to get on board before they closed the doors. In fact, they asked if I was Adrienne, so they were looking for me.
When we took off from Chicago, we encountered the worst turbulence that I've ever encountered. It made a really good roller coaster: first we were pushed up by the air, and then we would drop. I hate roller coasters -;) I asked myself why I had to make that flight.
Eventually the ride smoothed out. We were a little late coming in. The final destination of the flight was Kahului, Maui, but as much I would have liked to accidentally stay on board, I got off in San Jose. It took over a half-hour to get our luggage, which is a long time for San Jose.
I came home to find that I forgot to leave my mailbox key for the pet sitter (oops), so I need to go to the post office and get my mail. Also, the pet sitter says that I owe the whole amount, although I left a check for the pet sitter when I left. Also, MSN says that my account is no longer valid?!?
It was too late to run errands by the time that I got home, so tomorrow will be a busy day. What a strange beginning to 2004.
