One foot in front of the other
Jan. 18th, 2004 04:59 pmI've been sick all week. It started out when I got dizzy and winded when I exercised, and my heart raced. Then I started getting dizzy and queasy walking, and it hurt to breathe. Etc. I just was traveling, so it would've been easy to pick up a case of the nasties.
The thing is that we're producing the final books for two of our releases on Wednesday (as in, three days from now). Also, another writer was out sick as well. The basic reaction to my being sick was roughly "That's too bad. I need you to do this and this and this."
It's been really frustrating. A couple of times, I was in tears because I was exhausted and wanted to sleep. So I bought a sleeping bag, foam pad to put under it, little pillow, flashlight, and alarm clock, and put them under my desk. (There's a shelf that runs around three sides of the office.) I haven't actually slept in the sleeping bag yet, but have rested on it, and it's pretty comfortable. The sleeping bag makes my office look like a perfect dorm room: besides the bag, there's a computer, piles of paper on the desk, the guitar, and two boxes of Diet Coke cans that need to be recycled.
I canceled most of my lessons, and haven't exercised since Monday. As of Friday, walking from my office to the car and back wiped me out. I've gotten a lot of sleep this weekend, and am feeling stronger, so I might try to walk on the treadmill at work if I have time.
When I went back to the car after running an errand, I found a scratch on the side of the car. At first, I thought that it was deliberate, but there are a series of vertical scratches that are all the same length, so it looks like something rubbed against the car. Damned if I know what. Why do new cars attract that kind of thing?
On the other hand, I'm getting something resembling a sense of humor back. When I left the lab this morning at 7 AM, I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the windows and was amused by it: long wavy hair that's currently falling in my face, glasses, black leather jacket, jeans, backpack (with laptop), and the guitar. A moment of "me-ness", as it were.
I'm debating about asking if I could take a brief leave of absence (1 month) after we ship. I'm really burnt out and worn out. Also, I could get a good start on projects around here in a month (if I discipline myself to work 8-hour days on them). I don't know how well that request would go over. We still have one more release to go, but its General Availability date has just moved way out. I've been worrying a little that we might now be overstaffed. On the other hand, if I wanted to take a leave, I really should have requested it already. We'll see.
