God's scorched earth policy?
Jul. 21st, 2006 11:41 pmI had thought that 100+ degree days happened only sporadically in Fresno. And I was right; about a week ago, the newspaper said that on average there would have been nine 100+ days up to that point, but this summer there had been 21 100+ days. And it's been 100+ every day since then with more than one day at 109. Tomorrow they're predicting a high of up to 111. (I keep meaning to ask my colleagues if this is in fact Hell.) Good thing that I'm planning to go to San Jose; even if it's 103 there, I'll take it.
But creatures great and small can survive this heat. I alternate between coping with the heat and running errands as I normally would, and feeling like I can't stand one more second of it. The one time that I got really dizzy, however, was in an air-conditioned WalMart. Go figure.
The cats don't know that they have it good, living in a climate-controlled environment. However, on the hottest days, they still drink more water, eat less, and sleep more.
I'm very pleased that my outdoor plants (except for a couple that fried early on) are surviving. I've been careful to soak them every night so that they don't dry out.
Unfortunately, the spiders on the patio are thriving too. They apparently want to catch me in their webs; I guess that they figure if they caught me, they'd have food for life -;) First, one kept on building a web right above the gate out from my patio, where it would hit me in the face. (One time in the dark, I did get a face full of spider web.) I kept on knocking the web down, and eventually the spider stopped building it. I thought, "Good. That's settled." Then this morning, I opened my front door to find a web stretched across the doorway and a spider waiting expectantly in the middle.
Mom visited last weekend and was a big help in getting my kitchen pulled together. By the way, I really like the Fresno airport; it's small, but well thought out.
