Soup du jour
Nov. 18th, 2006 11:55 amScoop Nisker on KFOG had a tag line, "If you don't like the news, go out and make some of your own." Well, you guys aren't posting enough to entertain the unemployed <grin>, so I guess I'll post.
My debit card expires at the end of the month, but I never received the replacement card. So I called Wells Fargo--and they canceled my current card, leaving me without a debit card. So I need to zip out of here and get a temporary ATM card while I wait for the new card. The bank branches in Fresno close at 2 instead of 4 in San Jose (the nerve!), so I need to get moving. (Hey, I didn't say that this was going to be an exciting entry -;))
I am grateful for the chance to look at how I'm doing things. I never got a washer and dryer for my unit (and as things turn out, I'm glad), so I do my laundry in a central laundry room. The other night, I found myself thinking that I didn't want to go fold and bring back my laundry. However, I knew that if I didn't go, my laundry would wrinkle, and I'd have nothing to wear in the morning, and someone else might want to use the dryers...etc. So I went and got the laundry. But then I started wondering what the difference was between the laundry episode and other things that I know that I should do, but don't, and have had some success in making changes.
I dumped my therapist. I've been trying to go through boxes of books and pull out ones that I'm willing to sell. A couple of weeks ago, I set a goal of filling up four boxes of books to sell, and wound up with three. I think that if I had set a goal of say, one, I wouldn't have even filled up one box. So I told him about that, and said that I wanted to set a goal of responding to 10 job ads a week. He said that I should set a goal of responding to one job ad a week, and goof off the rest of the time. Great. At that rate, it'll take me a year to find a new job.
The one good thing that he did do was recommend a book called Do One Thing Different: Ten Simple Ways to Change Your Life. The basic idea of the book is if what you're doing isn't working, try something else. I had been having a mental block about writing cover letters when I sat down to my computer. So I printed out job listings and took them with me to Arby's, and worked on them in longhand after I ate dinner. It worked, so now I'm making a regular habit of cover letters for dessert.
The thought occurred to me that if I had perfect self-discipline, I could really change my life. (But I have a long, long way to go.)
My car was supposed to be ready on Friday, but now they're saying it'll be ready on Wednesday. Well, poop.
Mom is flying in tomorrow and staying slightly over a week.
