We rolled in from New Orleans last night. The trip was great. It wasn't so much that we were away as we were there, and it seems strange to be back. We actually stayed two extra days. We didn't plan to be down there for the five-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, but we were, and it was very interesting. I have notes about the trip for a travel diary and lots of pictures, but it will take a while to sort through them.
I haven't decided yet whether I prefer train travel to air travel. The advantage of the train is that you can walk around (although you spend most of your time in your seat), stretch out at night if you have a "roomette" with sleeper berths, and sightsee out the windows. The seats have more legroom than an airline seat. Amtrak also has terrific customer service; it's very refreshing as compared to the airlines. The food was excellent too. The downside is the length of the trip (about 24 hours on the train from New Orleans to Detroit plus some wait time). The train last night was two-and-a-half hours late, and I've read that lateness is fairly common. I could see taking another train trip in which we take the train one way and fly back.
Edited to add: Wow. I lost a couple of pounds in New Orleans. It wasn't for lack of eating. The food was fabulous. I guess that all the walking that we did saved us.
Classes start today, so I'm scrambling to get organized.
