An intense day
Jun. 23rd, 2011 01:44 amOn Monday, I taught my first Library Orientation class. It's been years since I last gave a presentation, and it showed, but I think that it went okay. It was one of the longest presentations that I've given thus far (35-40 minutes?), and I gave the students exercises to do at the end. The instructor thanked me for teaching it.
When I got home, the house was ablaze with light, and it was 1:30 AM. My mom usually goes to sleep around midnight, and I didn't think that she stayed up to find out how my class went. She did ask how my class went, but then she told me that a long-term (long, long-term--I first met them when I was 5 or 6) friend of the family (Arthur) who lives in the UK left a message that his partner (Peter) was in Intensive Care with an infection that had spread to his blood. Mom was staying up to call Arthur when he first got up, UK time.
Mom did reach Art, and learned that Pete was being transferred out of Intensive Care, which was a good sign. Then she went to sleep.
At that point, though, I was really wired. I turned on the TV, planning to watch it only for a few minutes while I ate something. Piers Morgan was interviewing Ryan O'Neal. It was one of the most intense, brutally honest (well, from his perspective) interviews that I've seen. I was riveted by it and watched the whole thing.
When Piers Morgan was over, I still was fairly wired, but was yawning a little. I read for quite a while in bed, and still wasn't sleepy. I finally took a herbal sleep aid that usually works for me, and it did work.
Mom talked to Pete yesterday, and he has been moved out of Intensive Care. However, he's bored and doesn't have access to a TV, so my mom and I are talking about sending him a portable CD player ("Discman" style) and some books on CD. It's possible that he might be in long-term care for quite a while.
Another small, good bit of news is that Harlee and Zara were nose-to-nose through the gate on Monday, with no hissing, growling, or batting at each other. I would say that it's time for supervised interactions, but we've had a problem with Zara breaking some of my mom's stuff. I'm trying to use SSScat to keep her away from some items, but my mom is (understandably) worried about Zara causing more damage in the rest of the house. Not sure how that is going to work out....
