The Devil Is in the Details
Apr. 12th, 2012 10:18 pmRight now, I'm juggling three classes: my semester-length class in cataloging, a two-month class in metadata for digital library projects, and a one-month class in Dewey Decimal Classification. I'm finding my cataloging class frustrating because there are a staggering amount of rules to learn. That also explains why it's so tough to find an entry-level cataloging or metadata librarian position; it takes a long time to become a good cataloger, and no one wants to pay for the learning curve. (I've even found a couple of mistakes that my instructor made!) I'm doing well in the class; that is, I've been consistently getting better grades than average. However, I want to do brilliantly and produce perfect work, which isn't happening. (Okay, it happened once, but that's it.) I also want to post my exercises on my online portfolio, but I'm concerned that mistakes will turn potential employers off.
I am determined to get a cataloging or metadata librarian job though. Speaking of which, I want to apply to a job in Indiana that really is entry-level, but they want the application mailed by next Wednesday, so I guess that I'm going to send my application overnight mail. The pay is lousy, but I'd take the job for the experience. I found cheap places to live though, so the salary might be livable.
Zara is doing really well on the anti-anxiety drugs. She gets in a lot less trouble, and she's been showing her sweet side more. They are also making her less aggressive. One time when she ate all of her wet food except the pill in the pill pocket (my mom said that she was going nyah-nyah-nyah at us -;)), she started trying to rip up a box. She doesn't do stuff like that when she takes her meds, which is most of the time. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, but so far, so good.
I've been wearing the hearing aids for a week now. The effects are subtle, but I think that they're helping. I can now enter a student ID (string of numbers) into the computer facing away from patrons without asking them to repeat themselves. However, there still are a few people whom I can't understand even with the hearing aids. I'm frustrated because the audiologist keeps asking me to come in so that he can find out how I'm doing. I understand that he's trying to do a good job, but I want to be able to check the hearing aids off of my list and go on to the next thing.
I guess that's about it for now.
