Priorities

My cataloging class and Dewey Decimal Classification Class end a week from today (Monday). My Metadata for Digital Collections class ends May 18th. I've been trying to map out my summer. I'm not taking any classes at WSU because they didn't offer any classes that I wanted to take (and summer semester is optional).

This summer, I'm planning to take an XML class online offered by Foothill College. (Yes, the one in CA. Hey, I've been there! I just had a pang of homesickness for mountains.) It starts on 6/11 and runs through 7/20. I'm also planning to take an online Perl class created by ed2go and sponsored by Marygrove College in Detroit. In order to not overlap the XML and Perl classes, I'd need to start the Perl class on July 18.

This leaves me with an open block of time from mid-May to mid-June. One thing that I really need to do is finish my research project and get it off of my back. I also need to do some work getting stuff organized here. I also really need to work on my French. (It also might not be a bad idea to work ahead on XML and Perl.)

However, I'm going to start to take classes at WSU to become a Digital Collections librarian in the Fall. I was wondering if I should get a copy of Photoshop (which I can get at a discount from WSU) and do some of the Photoshop tutorials on Lynda.com and in Photoshop books to learn to manipulate digital images. Foothill also offers a Photoshop class, but I'd have to take it in one of the summer sessions. (I was also wondering if I should get Adobe Creative Suite as well as just Photoshop because eventually I'd like to learn Web design, but it might be years before I'll have the time to work on Web design, so I decided not to get the full Suite.) Foothill also offers a class on "Images for the Web" that sounds interesting too.

I'm planning to take a metadata class (my third!) and database class this Fall at WSU. Foothill also offers a database class. (Come to think of it, I think that I took a database class at De Anza, but that was many, many years ago.) The advantage to taking it at Foothill is that it would be a lot cheaper than WSU, but I don't really want to take it at the same time that I'm working on XML and Perl, especially in condensed summer sessions.

It would be fun to mess around with Photoshop.

Taking a class on CSS would be helpful too, but I don't know when I would fit it in....I need to keep setting priorities.
