Someone, I forget who, said that Central Illinois is where the South begins. Tonight I was behind a woman at the grocery store with a Southern accent. She was blonde, wearing a camouflage sundress, cowboy boots, and had a tan and tattoos. It was kind of cool to see her because she's someone whom I wouldn't be likely to see in Chicago or Detroit. I got a little impatient with her because after she scanned and bagged her groceries, she then asked her son to pick out some candy. (Couldn't he have been picking it out while they scanned?) On the other hand, her hubby was handing her stuff out of the cart to scan, and her kids were bagging the groceries, so they got out of there fairly quickly.
There definitely is a different time sense down here. People stroll through the grocery store, while this city slicker is tearing around corners throwing stuff in my cart. I was especially in a hurry tonight because I told someone on Freecycle that I'd be at home after 7, and I made it with a whole 3 minutes to spare. I saw a dentist on Friday, and even though he's originally from Chicago, he's also adopted the viewpoint that we can get the work done on my teeth in a leisurely manner. I'll have to explain to him that we have less than two months.
I'm giving away a adjustable closet rod and a Dyson vacuum cleaner on Freecycle. Everyone wanted the Dyson, of course, although I did tell them that it's old and the suction isn't great; it needs to be taken apart and cleaned out. One woman said that she'd "sing and tap-dance" if I gave it to her, which charmed me, so I'm giving it to her. (In San Jose, there always was someone who insisted that you have to give the item to the first person who responded, but the rules are that you can give it to whomever you like.) I also gave away a space heater to one of the people who works at the library, so things are clicking along.
