I finally saw a dentist a few weeks ago, and he determined that I needed a lot of work done. I'm not surprised because it's been a few years since I've seen a dentist. (I didn't have dental insurance when I was a part-time library assistant.) I was delaying going to the dentist because I took so much sick time in December and January, and then got involved with school, but now that I had a deadline, I went. I have to hand it to the dentist; when I told him that I was leaving town at the end of the month, he managed to fit in all the work that needs to be done. However, that means that I'm going to the dentist two or three times a week. I'm about halfway through, and I'm already really tired of it. And apparently I'm "Novocaine resistant," which means that they need to give me a much higher dose of Novocaine than usual and wait a long time for it to kick in. On Friday, I had the work done to order a couple of crowns, and they gave me three times the normal amount of Novocaine, and still had to do a "nerve block," which apparently means shooting Novocaine near the nerve going down to that side of the mouth. The dentist is getting a little exasperated that I don't get numb quickly, but believe me, I wish that the opposite was the case. I've now been told that I need to get there a half-hour early to give me time to "numb up". Monday, that means I have to be there, in Jacksonville (45 minutes away) by 8 AM. Oh joy.

It's been a bad week healthwise for all of us. I needed to make an appointment for a blood test for Harlee to see if the prescription food and meds are helping her liver readings, so I made one for Saturday. Zara started throwing up once a day early in the week, but then she threw up a hairball, so I figured that was it. On Thursday, I was out sick with dizzy spells, upset stomach, etc. (I'd believe that stress is a component of it, but I also think that all the Novocaine probably isn't doing me any good either.) When I was home on Thursday, Zara threw up twice, so I threw myself together to go get her some hairball remedy. When I got home, I gave it to her, and she promptly threw it up. That really alarmed me, so I made an appointment at the vet for her when I brought Harlee in for her blood test. Friday, she didn't throw up though, and she ate a lot of food.

So this morning started bright and early bringing both cats to the vet. (I prefer taking them one at a time over wrangling both of them, but oh well.) I had little problem getting them into the carriers, much to my surprise. (Harlee, jumping up on the cat tree when I'm trying to get you in the carrier just makes it easier for me. Oops, maybe I shouldn't say that. ) Harlee's meowing in the car set Zara, who usually is quiet, off meowing too. I had to feel sorry for Zara though. By the time that we got to the vet, she had drool dangling from her mouth. (I keep wondering how I got two high-strung cats at the same time.) Zara was good at the vet though. They didn't have to knock her out. She just hissed and growled a little. Zara checked out as healthy during the exam, and they took an x-ray, and she hasn't ingested any foreign objects, nor has a bowel obstruction. They gave her an anti-nausea shot and told me to keep an eye on her, and bring her back if she's still sick.

I asked if I could bring them in when we leave for Michigan to give them a sedative, and they said yes. That will make the trip easier on all of us. I also asked if they boarded cats, and they don't, so I'll need to make phone calls on Monday to find a place to board them while the movers are here.

Now all three of us are recovering from our ordeal -;) Harlee is following me around complaining, just in case I had the idea that she likes going to the vet. Okay, Harlee, I get the message.

Added: At the vet, I had to laugh when they heard Harlee wailing and carrying on, and they assumed that she was the "caution" (that is, difficult to handle). I explained that it's the quiet one that you need to watch out for.
