Get Your Kicks / On Route 66
Jan. 11th, 2015 12:41 pmThe weather was absolutely frightful this week: temps in the low single digits with wind chill below zero. We were hoping that the College would cancel work on the worst day, but no dice. So I was wearing the warmest sweaters that I have, even though they made me look shapeless. I ordered another sweater online because I'm sure that this "polar vortex" weather will come back, plus bought a sweater and some blazers at Goodwill. And I've already asked my mom for a "fisherman's sweater" for next Christmas. I'm really not handling this weather well. I've decided that I could never live in Minneapolis, even though it is a cool town and has a good university, because of the weather. And I'm glad that I didn't get a job in Fargo the year before last year. When I was younger, I handled cold weather much better. However, it was in the 20s yesterday, and I was running errands without thinking that it was freaking cold, so I guess that I can handle "normal" winter weather okay. Today, we're supposed to have freezing rain, so I'm staying indoors.
Yesterday, I met some Meetup people at a cute diner in Atlanta, IL.
It's off of the old Route 66, which I took to get to the restaurant. The group was chatty and the waitress was funny. For example, when someone asked for some mustard, she said, "Sure, but that will cost you $15." The food was filling and cheap. The waitress, as it turns out, is from Lincoln, and she recognized me as working for the College, but didn't know what I did, so I told her that I was a librarian there. After we had lunch, the waitress and I talked for a long time about Lincoln, the College, and our pets. She said that Lincoln has a heroin and meth problem, but that they keep quiet about it. She recommended that I get a dog for protection, given that I'm living alone. The dogs that I'm interested in, Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers, would be more likely to lick a person to death, but I suppose that people would be less likely to break in if I had any sort of large dog. That explains why, when I told a faculty member that I moved down to Lincoln, she said, "Do you feel safe?" I'm a little freaked out. But I have a lot of organizing to do before I could get a dog. And I'm also reading about them; they seem more complicated than cats are.
Today, I'm going to work on organizing stuff. I also am working on some research for a poster presentation that I want to do at the big library conference in San Francisco later this year. And I want to get organized to do Younique stuff, plus I'm going to apply for some jobs online to make extra cash for the San Francisco trip. So I have my work cut out for me.
