I want to learn more about investing and save up money to invest. I checked out some books on options trading because that has always interested me. I also got some free Kindle books on forex trading. I plan to read them and do a LOT of paper trading over the next year. (Yes, I know that if you don't know what you're doing, you can lose your shirt. Hence the lot of paper trading.)
Then I got diverted into the stock market. I like Kiplinger's Web site, and read a lot of articles recommending stocks, and I have a nice list of stocks to check out. I bought books on reading a financial statement, value investing, and dividend investing.
The only thing is that I have limited cash flow. I looked into "share building," or buying small numbers of shares as you get the money, but someone pointed out that you lose a lot of money in trade fees if you do that. They suggested saving money in a high-yield savings account until you have a bunch accumulated to trade, so I opened an account. I also found a trading site with no minimums and low trading fees (TradeKing).
I do have some money in the academic equivalent of a 401 K (TIAA-CREF), but this is much more fun. I'm such a librarian; I love research. And life is a journey :)
