I'm still alive...sort of. Work has been insane; we've been scrambling to get stuff done before we leave for winter vacation. We've been trying to cram a month's worth of work into a couple of weeks. I'm almost done; I still need to provide input for my performance appraisal, but I'm putting that task behind packing for Detroit and cleaning because I can provide my input from Detroit, if necessary. Unfortunately, January will be more of same. I so don't want to come back after vacation, but I know that I have to. I guess the best thing that I can do right now is not think of work or January.

I've been attending my lessons this week in the true spirit of "Okay, that's done, so I can check it off the list". I'm really, really tired, so I'm hoping that that's the reason for the malaise. Some of it might also be normal winter torpor; I guess I'll find out how much after I rest up in Detroit. I don't really want to mess with my medications if I can avoid it. However, I'm already doing the best thing that I can do combat depression (getting exercise). We'll see.

Swimming is the bright spot of the week. I started lessons, and can now swim a crawl stroke halfway across the pool. It's a start. My childhood obsession with swimming is starting up again; while I haven't been swimming nearly enough because I've been putting extra time in at work, I think about swimming all the time. The pool at the Y is open really limited hours for the winter, which is causing problems. I'm thinking about joining a 24-Hour Fitness facility near me that has an indoor pool (unlike the Y, which has an outdoor pool), and it's open longer hours than the Y. The kicker is that if I join before I leave, I can get a guest pass at a health club near my mom to swim. (The down side is that I'll be paying a dual membership until I finish my swimming lessons.) I'll see what I can do.

I'm also focusing on building up the muscles used in swimming. I think that I want a rowing machine because it works on some of the same muscles.

I did try the walk/run routine, although I haven't been putting enough time into it either because of work. I'm so weak that I can't complete the entire beginning routine, but at least I've started. I'm trying to take it slow because I've tried to do too much too soon in the past, and gotten discouraged. My running shoes are going with me to Detroit.

I also received the new bicycle, which has been sitting in the middle of the living room floor. The cats love the little platform (the box), but I'm less thrilled with it -;) I must assemble it before I leave because I don't want the pet sitter to deal with the box.

That's about it. It's going to be good to get away for a while.

ACTUALLY you can use a scam I used to do all the time when I traveled. :) Just go to that other 24HF and say you're thinking of being a member and you'd like a day pass to check out the place and they almost always give you one. Then you can use the place once (scam only works once :) ) while you're there... Or ask them about day rates, I think they used to have those too. I know the Y did, but I can't remember 24HF. But hey, try it, no big deal if they say no...

Have a wonderful holiday and nice to see you on the list again :)

Unfortunately, there are no 24-Hour Fitness facilities near my mom, but 24-Hour Fitness is part of a network of health clubs that give each other's members guest privileges when traveling (for a fee). I'll check the local facility out Sunday or Monday, and if I like it, I'll join even though I'm still a Y member. I'm kind of tired of checking the weather forecast to see if I can swim at the Y or not. (There are some Y's with indoor pools, but they're a lot farther than 24-Hour Fitness.)

There's a Y near my mom as well. If I don't join 24-Hour Fitness, I'll call them and see if they have day rates.

Happy holidays!
