Not sure what to do. My voice has improved a lot since I quit smoking, but it still breaks up sometimes during high notes. I've been wondering if I should have a doctor look at my vocal cords. So I was singing scales (or half scales) earlier in the hopes of finding the spot where it breaks up, and of course, it didn't break up at all. I don't know whether I should call the doctor or not.

I also tested my range, and while I still have a two-octave range, it's shifted a lot lower. I'm singing in alto range (and a little lower!). When I was younger, I was a first soprano, so I've lost high notes and gained low notes.

I also don't know when to contact the voice teacher. I also think that the dental work that I'm going to have done will cure my intermittent sore throats, but that would push me into October.

Maybe I should wait until the end of the month and see what shape my voice is in then. If it still breaks up, then I'd go to the doctor. At that point, I'd contact the voice teacher.

Any thoughts on what I should do?

I would wait. It hasn't been that long since you quit smoking. You might want to get a few lessons with a voice teacher first, and see what the teacher suggests. That's what I would do, anyway.

That's true. I keep thinking that my voice should be in good shape before I start working with the voice teacher, but the teacher might have some ideas on how to address my problems. Thanks!

If your voice was in perfect shape, then you wouldn't need a teacher. That's like cleaning your house before the maid gets there.

A good voice teacher should be able to instruct you on ways to improve your voice, and be up on ways to correct the damage that smoking might have done. If after you follow his/her advice, and still see no improvement, then get your self to the doctor.
