I just joined Netflix. Do you have any suggestions for movies that I should add to my list? I like art house and independent films, and some classic films. Thanks.
Add James Rocci to your friends list - he's handy. You're also welcome to add me if you like. My email is on my info page.
I enjoyed The Red Violin and The Pillow Book immensely. I think those would be pretty squarely in your art house/independent categories. I've found the best thing to do is rate movies you've seen - and read anything that looks interesting. I've found tons of stuff that's interesting that I wouldn't have found otherwise. I like foreign films in addition to romance and comedies so Netflix recommended things like Jetlag and Mostly Martha after I found a foreign indie film called Rosenstrasse.
Dunno if any of those will be remotely helpful to you (and Netflix is down for maintenance) but that's how I've found a lot of my queue.
I like the old Alex Guiness films, and in particular I've been remembering "The Ladykillers", which is far better than the recent knockoff. But all of them are good in a low-key, understated way.
