I'm shopping for a new telephone company because Cavalier Telephone (formerly Talk America) has gotten too expensive and has lousy customer service.

I looked into AT&T. They have the best prices. They have all their services and prices on their Web site. I haven't quite figured out their online ordering system yet. However, I've seen some complaints about hidden costs on the Internet.

I looked into MCI. I had service with them several years ago and liked it. However, I was trying to find out how much my data line for Internet access would cost. There was no information on their Web site. So I e-mailed them with the question. They sent back a spiel about their long distance service. So I e-mailed again saying "No, you didn't answer my question." Then they called me (to their credit, within minutes of my response). I talked to the person at their help center (who didn't speak English very well and had a hard time understanding me), and she transferred me to local service. The guy whom I talked to didn't speak English very well either and had a hard time understanding me. He kept on trying to sell me their long distance service. Finally, he gave me an answer. I said "Thanks--that's all I needed to know. Bye." and hung up. Then he started calling me back over and over again. At first, I tried to ignore the phone, but eventually I picked up the phone and said "Why do you keep calling me?!?" He said, "We got disconnected and I'm trying to help." I said, "No, I hung up." "Oh." Now I'm leery about MCI.

Which company should I choose? Any thoughts?
