New on my classic movie list, my mom and I watched On the Beach last night. I'm not going to review it yet because [livejournal.com profile] ravengirl discussed seeing some of the same movies at the same time and reviewing them, but I was dubious about the starting premise that everyone was wiped off the face of the earth during a nuclear war except for one town in Australia and some men in a submarine. So I went online and found some sites that said yes, some people even in the Northern Hemisphere would survive a global nuclear war, although I sincerely hope that people never have to validate that assumption. Then I read about Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Then I went to sleep and dreamed about nuclear war all night. When I got up, I made my bed, but decided to lie down on top of it "for another five minutes" -- and slept for another three hours. I have to get cracking on a bunch of stuff to do today.

I've never read any of his books. Do you have any recommendations?

It's hard to find them now, and I liked all of them for different reasons, but I particularly liked "In The Wet". He was an engineer, and this one was quite metaphysical. It was written in the 50's and projected a future set in 1985.

And, of course, "A Town Like Alice" - also a movie, I think.
