I saw the headlines about Brussels this morning when I was eating breakfast, but had to get to work, so I didn't read the stories at that time. My basic reaction was, "Oh shit." I was wondering if something was going to happen when they caught that Paris bomber, and it did.
My mom was feeling very emotional about it and sent me an e-mail, so I called her tonight and talked to her. We had friends of the family who lived in Brussels for a long time. She's been there several times (including in the airport, of course) and I've been there once (including in the airport, of course).
I liked Brussels. It's an unpretentious working city. I dubbed it the "Chicago of Europe" (London being New York and Paris being San Francisco in my U.S.-centric view of the world). Because I was 17 when I went there, I have some fairly clear memories of it. I'd like to go back there sometime.
I'm feeling kind of sad--no, empty--about this. It's not surprising that this happened; there's no good way to stop incidents like this; it'll happen again somewhere; there's absolutely nothing that I can do except post articles about this on Facebook. So, empty.
