When I come home, I lie on the bed with Zara for a little while. Lately, she'll fall asleep as soon as I do that. I'm wondering if she isn't getting enough sleep during the day because she's worried about Mimi harassing her? I can shut the gate in the bedroom while I'm gone, but Zara does like having the run of the house. Not sure what I should do.

I tried closing the gate, and she looked unhappy, so I guess that answers the question.

When you're home, spend time with the cats, for sure. But also remember, cats are like toddlers. What they want might not be best for them. It doesn't matter how much Ella wants to roam the halls of my building, I don't let her, of course. But she'll SCREAM at the front door forever (since dogs are now allowed in the building.)

Any big change like this should warrant a vet trip.

Also, if there is still friction, you should separate the cats when you're not home. I separate mine when I go downstairs to the mailbox! Attacks can be fast and fierce.

Their fights aren't too serious. They emit a lot of noises and bat at each other's paws, but don't go for a full-blown attack. I think that they fight more when I'm home. They tend to stay in separate rooms when I'm not around, but both want to hang out with me when I'm home. That's when the fights happen.

Zara seems more alert tonight, so maybe she was just tired yesterday.
