Actually, I think that there are certain disaffected people within society who will find an enemy. At different times, the "enemy" has been African-Americans, Jews, gays, the government....Right now, it's people who are perceived to be Arab-Americans.

I belong to a group that tracks hate crimes, and I'm curious to see if hate crimes against other frequently victimized groups will go down right now.

However, trying to understand the mechanism doesn't really help my heart....
