Small domestic crisis

My toilet stopped flushing late last night. I think that the chain has snapped, although I didn't look too closely at it this morning. I do have new hardware for it, so I'll probably replace all the hardware.
My question is how do I drain the water from it? I know that there's a water shutoff valve, but how do I get the water that's already in there to drain?
And yes, I have another bathroom. Otherwise, I'd be a little distressed right now-;)

You can either sop that up with a towel or paper towels, or let what will drain out on the floor, and then sop it up with a mop.
That's if you're taking the fill valve out, or the tank off. Otherwise, just leave the extra bit of water there.
