Who let my air out?

Now that I'm back and relaxed, I seem to be collapsing. I woke up early on Saturday, was inspired by napping cats to take a brief nap later--and slept for four hours. I was practically falling asleep in line at Walmart at 11 PDT, but managed afterwards to go to the grocery store and run into work to water my plants through the magic of caffeine. Today was a little better. I'm trying not to push myself too hard because I'm supposed to be well-rested after my vacation. Heh.

I did pick up my new glasses. (Yes, I know, really exciting, but it's a change.) Kudos to Costco for preparing them a in week and giving me exactly what I ordered. (The price was reasonable too.) I'm trying to get used to both the new prescription and how they look. The lenses are smaller and I now look like I'm a part of this century, but they look strange to me so far.

I'm already planning my next trip. I had planned to go to Portland this year, but the next time that I'll be free will be in the November-December timeframe. Driving in a strange city in the rain doesn't sound like much fun, so I'm wondering if Atlanta would be drier than Portland at that time. (Of course, it's a great time to go to Austin, but I'd like to wait until after I go to some more places to go back there.) I bought a couple more books on Atlanta, including a book of walks. (My book about walking in Raleigh-Durham was very useful.)

I thought that the comment about picking up accents in platofish's journal (http://www.livejournal.com/users/platofish/164905.html interesting. I also pick up accents quickly. And, true to form, my vowels were getting longer shortly before I left Raleigh-Durham. (I'm also worried that someone might think that I'm making fun of them, but no one said anything.) I already must have some sort of Chicago-California mix to my speech. I can't hear the California part, but there must be some influence because I'm rapidly approaching the time when I will have lived in California as long as I lived in Illinois. On the other hand, native Californians can tell that I'm not from the area. Too bad that I didn't spend more time in North Carolina; a Chicago-California-North Carolina mix to my speech probably would be hysterical.

I have that accent problem, too. If I'm around someone with a heavy accent, I find myself starting to talk that way. Kind of freaky. Mostly I don't notice. After being in the army in Massachusetts for around 6 months and then going home on leave, my friends kidded me about sounding like a Bostoner ;)

When I was a kid, I acquired a New England accent during a trip to New England, but I was trying for one -;) I thought that it was cool that people spoke differently!
