"Thank you!"
Aug. 18th, 2011 01:42 amLousy day, but I learned something. A student was looking for a software application on a library computer, but I couldn't find it. I went across the hall to ask a tech guy about it (elapsed time about 3 minutes). By the time we came back, the instructor showed up and was arguing with the student. I *think* that the student told the instructor that he couldn't finish the assignment because he was waiting for me. The instructor came back later to yell at me and show me the application.
What did I learn? I just said "Thank you" when the instructor was yelling at me, and he went away. I also had to cold call former students to try to get them to re-enroll, and one person yelled at me because the person whom I was trying to call hadn't had that phone number for two years, and I said "Thank you" to her too. Kind of a passive-aggressive way to get people to shut up -;)
OTOH, karma might have been biting me in the butt. Yesterday, I told the landscapers that I wanted to keep a hosta that they were going to get rid of (they're ripping up the backyard so that we can put in a pond and garden). Of course, they got rid of the hosta, and I did yell at the head guy a bit. I guess I made an impression because they stopped what they were doing, went to the dump to look for the hosta, found it, brought it back, planted it, and even watered it -;) It's a little the worse for wear, but as long as the roots are okay, it'll come back fine next year.
