Life in Lincoln
Jan. 24th, 2016 03:18 pmI never thought that I'd like living in a small town so much. Lincoln has (almost) everything that I need: grocery stores, gas stations, a public library, the gym (although it's the only gym, but it has what I need), the post office, restaurants, and a coffee shop. And my apartment, work, and volunteer work. And I have the internet for a lot of things that I can't get in Lincoln. This is a good place to "dig in" and get my life together.
I'm considering hiring a "life coach" via e-mail to help me set priorities. I tend to want to do everything, and jump from thing to thing. I need someone to help me focus and hold me accountable.
I'm still enjoying my volunteer work at the Humane Society. Last Saturday, the person with whom I was working on cleaning the cat rooms (Terri) and I were laughing at the antics of the cats. One new cat (we don't know his name) is very curious and has to watch everything that's going on very carefully. Terri was cleaning out a kennel, and this cat was poking his little head in. He also inspected my work cleaning the litter boxes very carefully. It's fun to get to know the cats' personalities. There's a new cat who's in a room by himself because he has feline AIDS. I introduced myself to him, and apparently he liked how I smelled because he wanted me to pet him. And I was, but Terri started cleaning, and I asked if she wanted me to help, and she said that I should just continue socializing with the cat. But then Terri fed him, and he decided that food was more interesting than me :)
Friday was a pain at work though. We have a branch campus in Normal, and faculty, students, and staff can request books from our library or other libraries in our consortium there, and I drive them up to the campus and drop them off at the front desk. The patrons return them to the front desk, and the front desk receptionist is supposed to e-mail me and tell me that there are books to pick up, and I go get them. Well, she forgot to tell me to pick books up, and there were 11 books there, and they had been there long enough that they were declared "lost" by the other libraries from which they were borrowed, and the patrons had been billed for them. It's a total mess. I got the books back on Friday (the trip wasn't a total loss; I stopped in Normal and got some food for Harlee, which is one of the few things that I can't get in Lincoln), and am planning to contact the other libraries on Monday to ask them if they'll take the fines off. Otherwise, I'll tell them to bill the library, which could run into significant money because the fines for lost books start at $25 each. I was fit to be tied, but have calmed down a little. I ran into the library on Saturday, and was moving some shelves, and managed to cut myself, so I'm putting my blood, sweat, and tears into work right now....
I need to buckle down and finish a research proposal for a grant. The institution offering the grant trains librarians in research and mentors them through a research project. I have one in mind, but need to write it up. And I've procrastinated enough that I really have to get it done. I thought about going to a coffee shop and work on it, but I need to do laundry. However, I set the coffeepot up to make coffee, but forgot to turn it on, so that doesn't bode well.
