Oh good. After the men's skating tonight, there isn't any skating until the 12th. I need to get a lot done in the meantime.

I studied a little German before I went back to bed.

You can order anything online. I was going to send my mom a check for some money that I borrowed, but couldn't find my stamps. I ordered stamps online to be shipped to me. They're year-of-the-tiger stamps, which should be fun. I'll be happy when I get to Champaign and have a post office that's open later and with self-service machines.

I'm saving boxes for my move next summer, and one had crinkly paper in it. Mimi is having a great time playing with the paper.

I looked into apartments in Berlin out of curiosity, and wow. Expensive. How can anyone afford to live there? Though the apartments that you can get to from English-language sites are pricey. I wonder if there's a Craigslist for Berlin? Yes. And it has some more reasonable apartments.

I'm going to stay home tonight except for getting the mail. And I'll get stuff done when I'm not watching skating. Which reminds me I need to do laundry. I wound up watching the snowboarding.

Got the mail, and now I have all three German books (yay). It's sleeting out. Started laundry.

I missed the very beginning of the skating because they started it earlier than they said that they were going to, but I saw Nathan Chen win gold. I might watch the interview with him after the news, but what can he say besides, "I'm glad I won and I'm glad it's over."

I looked into tuition waivers for the possible iCAN program, and apparently the system is smart enough to know that I'm an employee. Good to know. Also, retirees are eligible for tuition waivers, but they don't allow second bachelor's degrees. Too bad. I'd major in Italian when I retire. I think I could take Italian classes though.

Had a headache at noon, so I lay down during lunch.

Two of the three German books are in my mailbox. I'll run get them later.

I think that I've found the place where I'd like to stay when I spend a year in Italy: Genova (Genoa). It's on the water. It's only a 1.5 hour train ride from Milan (and you can get to anywhere in Europe from Milan). It's also close to Nice, France. And there's Genovese pesto!

I also have a bunch of books on Berlin wishlisted on Amazon.

The headache came back, so I slept until 2 AM. So much for getting things done. It must be headache day because two of my colleagues left early with headaches. My boss said that the barometric pressure was going down. My eyes are all puffy.

I just had a brainstorm. I have a case of Hill's k/d food that Zara won't eat. I could sell it on eBay! Or Facebook Marketplace.

I decided to run my rent check over tomorrow after Italian and stay home today. I need to be home when the delivery person is shopping at Aldi in case there are substitutions. And as a bonus, it will be warmer tomorrow. (It's 11F now. Ugh.) And I'm doing a load of laundry, so I'll wait to take my nap until it goes in the dryer. I want to wear my warm and cuddly "The sloth is my spirit animal" sweatshirt! I'm working on my current box while I'm waiting.

Oh great. Cat fight. At least I can break it up with just my voice.

Napped and woke up before my alarm. Ate lunch. Mimi is being obnoxious and has taken over Zara's current favorite spot.

Threw myself together because I have a German lesson tonight. Made Italian flashcards while I was waiting for my Aldi order to be completed.

Put away my groceries.

Watched more ice skating. it wasn't as impressive as yesterday except for one of the woman skaters from Russia. I downloaded pictures from LJ while I watched.

Talked to Mom. She still hasn't talked to her oncologist yet. She's feeling better from the transfusion. She's looking for a good mop. Does anyone have any suggestions? I found a microfiber O'Cedar mop on Amazon that looks good.

Now I'm tired, but I have to wait for my German lesson. It's at midnight, which I prefer to having it back-to-back with Italian. I've been doing nighttime chores and getting climbed on by a cat (Zara).

German went okay, I guess. She had me reading things without giving me a pronunciation lesson. I promptly found one on the Web after the lesson. I booked another lesson and will see how it goes.

Hmm. I'm hungry. I guess that I'll eat and do the dishes and crash.

I found a German teacher who's available at a time that I'm free and who won't break the bank. So maybe I'll do it.

I bought a book on Germany and some German grammar and vocabulary books. The German books will take a while to get here because I bought them used.

I also bought some magazine holders.

Woke up and it's still snowing. I thought that it didn't look too bad, but then I noticed that you can't see individual steps at my neighbor's house. It looks like a snow ramp. It's amazing that things as small as snowflakes can cause a big mess. I'm snuggled up in clothes, a jacket, and slippers while I work. I'm wishing that we had a snow day, but we're working from home. Alas.

Mom called during lunch. She didn't have the chemo on Monday because her hemoglobin was low and she also had kidney issues. She had a transfusion, which helped her energy levels. Now she's trying to get an appointment with her oncologist soon to find out what the plan is. I don't know what to think about this.

Round 1 of the snow has stopped. It's hard to tell how many inches fell because I'm in a mobile home and am elevated. I've been faked out thinking that it wasn't much before. Weather.com says 11 inches!

Zara decided that waiting around on the kitchen counter for me to feed her wasn't working, so now she's in the office room blocking my computer monitor. Come on Mommy, get the hint! (Done.)

I read a Medium article about posting articles to LinkedIn. I was wondering what I could post ("dig your well before you're thirsty"), and it occurred to me that I could write articles about using our library system. Maybe I could parlay that into some consulting work when I retire.

Had some pizza. You know that it's cold when you open the oven and go mmmm when the heat escapes. I was today days old when I discovered that a pie server with serrated edges makes a better pizza cutter than a pizza wheel.

Took a nap and slept until 2 AM. I'm going to throw clothes into the washer and stay up until I can put them in the dryer.

Weather.com says that it's snowing again, but I don't see it.

It's raining cold rain. Brr. I hope it stops when I need to go out to get the headlight fixed.

I'm waiting impatiently for the Omicron surge to be over so that I can get my hair cut and my passport renewed. Patience, Adrienne.

Learning German is really calling me. I don't know why. Maybe there's something that I need to learn in Germany? But I want to study Italian consistently every day before signing on for something else. I found some free German lessons online. [profile] lenine2, what German instructor did you have? Were they good?

I installed some apps for train tickets in Europe.

I got on the list for snow removal after the big storm. Yay. By the way, the forecasters have said up to 12 inches of snow. Yikes.

On CNN: "More than a dozen HBCUs get bomb threats on the first day of Black History Month". Yikes. There are so many creeps in this country! Sometimes I wonder if it's hopeless. And: "2 Chicago synagogues were vandalized over the weekend as anti-Semitic incidents have US Jewish communities on edge". Oh crap.

You never know about people. The car repair place was full of people without masks and was playing NASCAR on TV. Well, it turned out that the woman at the counter loves reading and likes librarians, and we had a discussion about books. I have to admit that I was surprised.

My headlight is now fixed. I picked up more library books. And I have money to pay the mower guy to remove my snow-to-be.

The earlier discussion on [personal profile] dadi's journal about how well she speaks English made me think of reading LJs that are written in Italian. I found a couple that post fairly often (after having to figure out how to do a Directory Search!)

Piano class went okay. My teacher suggested that I work on not hesitating between measures or phrases, so I have a quest! Something to work on!

I published my new Medium article, a day late because I didn't get up from my nap last night. But I'm back in the groove.

I spent about an hour with News in Slow Italian, listening, reading, and making flashcards, so I get a green star on my calendar. I also did some German on Duolingo.

Now I'm trying to figure out what to clean or organize to get a gold star :) Maybe I'll clean out the office.

It's going to be weird to wake up to snow.

I have an appointment for tomorrow to get my car's headlight fixed. Yay.

The uni has a free series of webinars on financial planning, so I signed up. Can't hurt and might help.

I was mulling over adding a trip to Germany onto my bucket list. (Like I need another trip on my list!) I'd like to see Berlin, Munich, and Heidelberg. During World War II, my dad was in a camp for displaced persons near Munich. When I was in high school, he talked about taking a trip with me there, but I freaked because of the Nazi thing and most of my friends were Jewish. But my LJ German friends are cool! I asked him if he wanted to go there now, but he said that it would be too much trouble. Whatever that means. I ordered some library books about Berlin, Munich, and Germany.

I looked at a Rick Steve's tour of Germany, but it is mainly pretty castles, and I kind of want to sit with my mixed emotions and tour the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin and a concentration camp as well as "pretty castles".

That led me to learning German, but whoa, I need to pull myself back. I'd need to study more Italian first before adding something else. (Although German would be a good companion to Italian because it's very different.) What can I say. I love languages. Maybe I could just play with German on Doulingo for the time being.

Hmm. They're predicting a winter storm from Tuesday night through Thursday night with snow up to 8 inches. I wonder if I should cancel the appointment to take the girls to the vet on Friday. (I moved it back a week.) I might not be dug out. I also wonder if I should ask my mower guy to clear the snow.

Took a nap and slept through until morning.
