Well, I got an introduction to Italian men. A guy from Florence was trying to talk to me. We discussed our names and where we were from. He kissed me four times on the cheeks. Okay. Then he kissed me on the lips, and I decided to bail out to go back into the hotel. Then he followed me into the hotel. I locked the door. He tried the door. Sheesh. (He would no doubt be appalled if he knew how old I really am.)

The irony is that I have a crush on the group leader. I think that he knows it too. He winks at me :)

Anyway, we took the high-speed train over to Venice today. We arrived and we went for a walk as a group. Then we had lunch. Then our rooms were ready. Then we had a few hours to wander around. I did some window shopping and bought a t-shirt to add to my collection. Then I walked by the Grand Canal and sat down by its edge. I was wondering if that was a "bad tourist thing" to do, but the people sitting next to me were speaking Italian, so I guess that it was okay. I expected the Grand Canal to be larger than it is. I also saw a "tourists go home" sign. Ah well.

Here's a link to a video that I took of the Grand Canal.

Then we had a lecture about the history of Venice that turned out to be interesting. Then we had dinner.

Tomorrow we're going to St. Mark's Basilica and need to leave early. We're taking the vaporetto over there.

The group leader probably wouldn’t believe me, but I’m happy. I had a nice lunch at a sidewalk cafe. Then I went to a real Italian grocery store and got water and Diet Pepsi. It was fascinating, but I tried not to block the Italian people shopping. I also enjoyed people-watching. Now I want to take a nap. Couldn't sleep.

My other pair of glasses are in. I just called them and told them that I was in Italy, and they said that they’d hold them until I came back. The mammogram people called me about the ultrasound, but it’s Saturday so they won’t be there.

Strange, my first Italian teacher just friended me on Facebook (or at least I just saw the request). Synchronicity….

I looked at online pictures of the paintings in the gallery that I didn't go to today. I was mulling over getting posters of a few of them.

Had dinner at the same place as I had lunch because the food was really good. Now I'm in a food coma. I need to mostly pack because they are coming to collect our luggage at 7 AM. We leave at 8:45 to go to the train station for the train to Venice. Venice! My dreams will be fulfilled!

We went out to see the Doumo (church and dome) and Bapistry this morning. Then we had a couple of hours on our own. I stuck close to the Doumo because we were meeting there in the afternoon. I spent a lot of time in the sun. I bought a leather purse that I really like.

Then we went to the Accademia to see the David. My phone lost power right before we saw the David, but on the other hand, there are a million pictures of it online.

Then we walked back. The group leader asked if I was tired, and I said that I was. Then later he said sharply, "Are you all right?" I collapsed on the ground. The group members gave me their water. The group leader said that I should not wear the vest that I use for pockets. Eventually, I got up and made it back under my own steam. A doctor who was staying in the hotel gave me a Gatorade type of thing that I put into water.

We had dinner in the hotel. I wasn't hungry, so I left partway through, after reassuring the waiters that it wasn't anything wrong with the food. I lay down and slept.

Right now. I'm thinking that I'll skip the Uffizi Gallery tomorrow. I found a grocery store nearby.

I'm completely confused as to what day of the week it is.

I have my suitcase outside my room, and I have time to kill before breakfast.

We took the high-speed train to Florence. It was a nice ride, very smooth, and they even gave us snacks for free (hear that, Amtrak?) We had a fabulous lunch and then checked into the hotel. I like the hotel room. I went for a short walk around the block. First impressions: lots of small shops, coffeehouses, bakeries, and restaurants. I found a "Firenze" t-shirt. Then I napped.

We went on an orientation walk and then had dinner. Ow, ow, ow, my entire body aches. I’m back at the hotel and took some acetaminophen. Did I say ouch? A lot of my joints are on fire.

The acetaminophen is helping somewhat.

Went to sleep late and, annoyingly, woke up at 4:30 AM. I'll try to go back to sleep in a little while.

You guessed it. Pictures/ )
