Day 6: Doumo and Accademia: Collapse!

We went out to see the Doumo (church and dome) and Bapistry this morning. Then we had a couple of hours on our own. I stuck close to the Doumo because we were meeting there in the afternoon. I spent a lot of time in the sun. I bought a leather purse that I really like.

Then we went to the Accademia to see the David. My phone lost power right before we saw the David, but on the other hand, there are a million pictures of it online.

Then we walked back. The group leader asked if I was tired, and I said that I was. Then later he said sharply, "Are you all right?" I collapsed on the ground. The group members gave me their water. The group leader said that I should not wear the vest that I use for pockets. Eventually, I got up and made it back under my own steam. A doctor who was staying in the hotel gave me a Gatorade type of thing that I put into water.

We had dinner in the hotel. I wasn't hungry, so I left partway through, after reassuring the waiters that it wasn't anything wrong with the food. I lay down and slept.

Right now. I'm thinking that I'll skip the Uffizi Gallery tomorrow. I found a grocery store nearby.

I'm completely confused as to what day of the week it is.

So sorry you collapsed. Sounds like dehydration and low blood sugar? See if you can't find Gatoraide or a Vitamin Water to take with you, and maybe have energy bars on hand?

Thanks for this - it's giving me a good idea as to whether I can do this. Sounds too frenetic, not enough time to rest/relax between things.

Yeah, a lot of what I want to do in Italy is have a gelato and watch the world go by (which I did do today). I don’t need to see every last thing.

That's what I'm thinking. I don't think the post-card tour - where you have to see every single sight works for me either.

I'm glad you were able to just sit and relax today - have a gelato. I'm wondering if a cruise is the better bet - because they do allow for that, or at least more than the land travel appears to? Although G Adventures allowed it - it was up to people to choose what they wanted, but you also have to pay more for the excursions. I guess with Road Scholar - you could opt out of various activities and still be fine?

Yeah, you can skip activities if you want. But the group leader was concerned that I’m skipping the Uffizi Gallery today and suggested that I take a cab. But I think that I need downtime.

It’s only around 80F/27C, which I don’t think of as very hot, but I was walking around outside a lot and the sun is hot. I’m feeling better today but am planning to rest today.
