I overslept and couldn’t take a shower, but I made it on time for Italian. It went well. She asked if I had gotten more sleep because it went better.

I just realized that I put the garbage out a day early yesterday. I’m getting my days mixed up.

Apparently I broke my little toe when I fell. That’s why the foot hurts. The radiologist also said that I have mild arthritis in my big toe, but that isn’t bothering me. Oh, and I have the beginnings of osteoporosis. I need to start doing weight training. I also need to get some soy milk. (I don't digest regular milk well.)

I had been considering adopting two cats in Lincoln whose human passed away, but after talking to my colleague/friend, I think that adopting two new cats would be a bit much for Zara and Mimi. I'll just adopt one cat, and if the cat needs a young companion, adopt another cat later. It just occurred to me that I could put a new cat in the "guest room," although Mimi would not be happy because she looks out the window there and snoozes. But it would be cozy for the new cat. It would force Mimi and the new cat to interact.

Happy 100th birthday President Jimmy Carter!

I'm wondering if I should mow the lawn now that I know my toe is broken. On the other hand, I had been mowing it with a broken toe and nothing dire happened. I’ll wait until I hear back from the doctor.

I was looking into arthritis, and I think that I would benefit from an anti-inflammatory diet. I need money to get various foods though. I was able to get a book about it from Kindle Unlimited. I also got Exercise for Better Bones from Kindle Unlimited.

Crud. I went to the grocery store and bought a few things, but I forgot to get soy milk! Aargh. I did get some calcium vitamins though.

I watched most of the vice presidential debate. I intended to have it on as background noise, but got interested. I was surprised at how civil it was and how much like a real debate it was. Vance told some whoppers though, like Trump saving the Affordable Care Act?!? Oh, and I got my Harris/Walz lawn sign and put it out.

I'm feeling an impulse to drop my class, but I should just get my homework done. There's so much else that I want to do though. I need to think about this. I think that I want to learn Javascript more slowly than this class will allow. Yeah, this class is too accelerated for me. I need to get some good books and work through them. The trick will be to block out the time to do it. I'm going to drop the class, practice piano, and go to bed.

I think that's was the problem with my other programming classes too. I can learn programming, but I learn it more slowly than other people who are really good at it. I'm a slow programmer.

I tried to drop the class, but it won't let me drop. I emailed the head of my program to find out what I need to do.

I'm looking into ways to be held accountable for studying Web programming. I might have found an online meeting app, but have some questions that I sent to the company.

I'm going to practice piano and go to bed.

Bought a few more pairs of 16P jeans. Paid my Comcast bill (in Urbana). Got laundry going. Requested that my CVS prescriptions be sent to me.

I seem to be losing weight around my middle, which is good because it's the "bad" fat, but I haven't lost much weight off of my boobs. Size XL jackets are still not fitting well. Oh well.

My second monitor for work wasn't working. I unplugged and replugged in the cable, nothing. Finally, I turned the docking station off and on--and it came up. It's going to be a weird day.

I added a flight to my Italy trip, but the debit card wouldn't let me pay the whole amount remaining for the trip. So I'm doing $2000 at a time. Kind of a pain, but whatever.

I've got two TaskRabbit guys coming on Friday to get the table, move the stepper downstairs, and put garbage in the dumpster.

I started looking at a trip to Colorado. Damn, hotels in Denver are expensive. Found a couple that might work. Now I'm trying to figure out what to do in Denver. I found a hotel in Glenwood Springs, the town that I liked.

The bad dumpster company is offering me one-half what I paid back. I think that it's the best that I'm going to get from them, but I'm not going to say that to them.

I looked into Comcast as a mobile provider, but someone said that they use Verizon towers and that Verizon throttles data access. Hmm. As I recall, though, AT&T didn't have great coverage here. Comcast does have a good price and international access for $10/day. I might give them a shot. I talked to them, and they would have to ship the phone to Illinois. Bah. Hmm. I can get a refurbished unlocked iPhone 14 for a good price on eBay. I need to think about this. I sent an email to Erik to get his take.

I started going through books in the plant room, which is the fun part of my homework. I got quite a stack because Mom had a bunch of picture books about Italy and Provence.

Headache. Need to lie down for a while. Couldn't sleep.

Hmm. If I want to write my app (my independent study project for next summer) for the iPhone instead of Android, I'd need a MacBook. The fun never stops. It might make more sense to get a cheap Android phone to test the app.

I think that I'm going to put laundry in the dryer and go to bed.

Got up early but kind of frittered away the time. My stomach is upset. I'm cozy, though, in my warm robe and slippers.

Zara was kind of picking at her food this morning, but she ate extra food yesterday, so I'm not worried yet. I was saving a Chewy box to use when I move next year (it's a nice size), but Zara has claimed it and is hiding under the packing paper :)

I was able to study Italian a little. The Italian lesson went well, although he will show me a conjugation and then give me an exercise in it without looking at the conjugation. I can't memorize it that fast!

Oh, I forgot to mention yesterday that I told Mom that Mimi likes to lie on bubble envelopes, so Mom is sending her an empty envelope! She said that she's getting quite fond of Mimi.

Took a nap and overslept because I was in the middle of a dream. Fed the girls, and Zara gobbled down her food, including the food that she didn't eat this morning, so I guess that she's okay. Now she's all snuggly. She likes to knead my right breast, and I told her that's not going to work!

I feel like going to sleep really early, but I have homework to do and I need to get gas. Plus I might wake up in the middle of the night and not be able to fall back asleep.

Well, the program is mostly done, but I'm getting an error that I can't figure out, so I emailed my instructor. Now I'll study for my quiz. I'm making bonehead mistakes (started the wrong quiz), so I think that I need to go get gas and start my nighttime tasks and head towards bed.

I don't think that I'll get to send my Italian emails tonight, but definitely tomorrow. My Italian teacher is pleased that I'm practicing Italian writing them. No, actually I sent one message and will send another one tomorrow.

Oh crap. I need to take out the garbage. I forgot. Done. And I forgot to scrub litter boxes. I put one on to soak overnight. I'll get the other one tomorrow night.

Got gas. Had a bite to eat. Found some Oracle cards on Amazon that I'd like to get, but need to wait until I get more money. Maybe I'll get them for my birthday? Did my nighttime chores. To bed, quickly.

TGIF!

I got up and had a bite to eat. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get Zara out of the litter box (she's lying in there) to clean it. Maybe I'll have to wait until she eats breakfast.

Okay. Got my program working, although it has a run-time error. Much better than the other day though. Now I feel like I could sleep a little.

Bloody hell. I accidentally stepped on Mimi, she squawked, and I tripped and fell and reinjured my leg. (She seems to be okay.) I have to hand it to the glasses folks; my new glasses didn't fly off. The one good thing is that freaked out Zara, and she got out of the litter box, so I scooped it. Now she's on me.

TGIF.

I didn't sleep well. Stupid leg was hurting. The Fitbit says that I slept though. I wasn't able to nap during lunch. I look like hell--very tired.

Okay, I submitted my programming assignment with some errors. But it's done. I think that I'm going to have some ice cream and go to bed.

I bought my Android programming book. Actually, I found a really cheap one on eBay, so I bought it too. I'm really stoked to get started, although I need to get past the midterm (already!) in my programming class first. I want to be ready to do lots of programming over winter break. I also pulled out my HTML Canvas book to work on over break.

Speaking of programming, my instructor has been exposed to COVID, but because it's an online class, it doesn't affect us.

I'm trying to figure what to make for dinner that doesn't require a lot of standing. Maybe linguini with red sauce. I can sit while the linguini is cooking.

I was eyeing a trip to Greece, although I wonder if I could pull that off next year given that I'll be moving.

Talked to Mom. The upshot is that her oncologist wants her to consult with a surgeon and radiation doctor to see what the best approach would be to treat the lung cancer. So she still doesn't know what's going to happen. I guess that we need to hang tight.

The good news is that I managed to get my shopping done. The bad news is that my leg is killing me. And I forgot to get a stock pot, so I just ordered one for delivery on Friday. I bought ingredients to make soup this weekend.

Got some of my groceries put away, but my leg is killing me. And I need to do homework, but I'm wiped out. I guess that I'll get up early to put the rest of the groceries away and do homework.

I've got us all fed. I'm trying to decide what to do about making dinner. It seems a little early to start the chicken in the crock pot. On the other hand, it will keep it warm after it cooks. Hmm, the recipe says to cook for four to six hours, so I'll wait. I've got the ingredients out.

Well, heck. Overslept my alarm by an hour and a half. Got the chicken cooking. Zara is convinced that because I was asleep and now awake, I'm going to feed them again. Well, now it's actually time, but she started asking for food earlier.

I'm squared away with my pet sitter for a possible late September or October trip. She's keeping the key for the time being.

Worked on my program and made good progress. Had a delicious dinner of Peanut Butter Chicken, mashed potatoes, and veggies pilaf. Zara, for some reason, was going after the veggies pilaf. Strange kitty.

Started laundry and got the garbage out. Cleaned up the kitchen.

Okay, I have my program working. I just need to tweak it tomorrow night. Far out. Now I need to crash because I need to get up early because I'm working on-site tomorrow.

Hmm. Houses are cheaper in Metarie, LA than New Orleans proper, and there's a bus that goes to New Orleans from there, taking 45 minutes. Driving is 15 minutes, and there's a parking lot at the edge of the French Quarter. Something to think about. Metarie also has a lakefront trail, which I'd like. There's also a Unitarian Church that's in New Orleans and that's close to Metarie. I'd rather live in New Orleans though, of course. I want to get The Insider's Guide to New Orleans because, no matter what I do for retirement, I'm sure to go back there. Love New Orleans.

I also checked how long a drive it is from New Orleans to Orlando (9 hours) for a yearly Disney/Universal trip. There also is a train that takes 48 hours. And I found an Orlando hotel for $79 a night. Who knows how expensive Disney will be at that point though :)

There's a big honking storm outside. Good. It'll water my garden. My potatoes are still growing like weeds. I wonder how many potatoes I'll get out of them.

Hmm. I was eyeing a programming bookcamp that includes mobile app development, but I can get a computer science degree for free through the university system. I wonder if someplace has a certificate in mobile app development. Yes, a community college has one online, but I've missed it for this year.

Got to get cracking on cleaning. I've been working on the kitchen. I've decided to clean the back half of the place (TV room and guest bathroom) plus the kitchen tonight and get the bedroom and bathroom floor over lunch tomorrow.

Okay, I'm wiping out, so I'm going to go to sleep and get up early.

Signed up for two Perl classes on Udemy and started working on them. I also ordered a used Perl book and got it.

Went to Aldi, got Zara's meds at Walmart, and picked up my grocery order at Walmart. Bought soda and body wash at Dollar Tree. Unloaded the car, and now I'm chilling. I don't dare turn on the Olympics because I'll get sucked in, and I have stuff to do tonight. Oh, and I bought a pineapple at Aldi, so I'm watching videos how to cut one up. I know that it won't be as good as fresh pineapple in Hawaii, but I love pineapple.

Put groceries away. Lay down for a nap (so much for getting stuff done) and slept through until morning.

days_unfolding: (Default)

Stayed up too late and then couldn't fall asleep. I got up and ate some oatmeal, which did the trick as it usually does. I drink soy milk, and Google says that soy milk is rich in L-tryptophan, so maybe that's it.

Olympics: Jade Carey won the gold for her floor exercise routine. Apparently Simone Biles being out was the best thing that could happen for the rest of the team. Simone Biles is going to do the balance beam final though.

I'm already changing some work-related goals in my list of goals. But at least, I'm thinking about them. (My boss discussed my cross-training with one of the programmers on another team, but he writes scripts in Perl. So I need to learn Perl.)

Sigh. I wanted to watch the gymnastics, but NBC kept on showing other events first. They have a thing for beach volleyball. So I wound up watching two hours of television, which wasn't on my to-do list. I can see how some people just cocoon and watch TV in the evening. It's relaxing. Hmm. I'm wondering what that means for piano class tomorrow. I guess that they'll show the gymnastics later, although there will be a lot of interest because Simone Biles will be in it.

I have the link to the equestrian eventing and show jumping, but it's 5 hours long. No.

Now I'm doing triage on what I need to do. The top things are practice piano and finish the knitting for class tomorrow. Hmm. I'm getting impatient with my knitting, probably because I have a deadline. Completed two rows of lumpy, bumpy knitting and I'm done. Now I'm taking a break to post and then I'll practice piano.

days_unfolding: (Default)

The no OS computer that I was looking at had no video card. Forget that. I can get a computer that's exactly what I want with Windows 10 installed, so maybe I should just get that. I'll sleep on it. Actually there's one with an enormous SSD drive with Windows installed, and you can get it with dual monitors, which would be very helpful. I'd need to add the 1TB drive. Hmm, if I get an enormous SSD drive, maybe I won't need the extra drive. Windows takes 20 GB, and Ubuntu takes 3 GB.

HelloFresh says that there is a delivery delay. That's actually a good thing. I can catch up!

There was a massive Comcast outage that impacted me. I lost a bunch of time to it, but now it's back up. Bah. At least, I didn't have go into the library and get my temperature taken first.

I'm enrolled in the two Computer Science classes for the fall.

I bought another Python book. And books about Excel macros and Visual Basic in Excel. I'm going to have quite a library. And I just bought the textbook for one of my classes in the fall. And a book on Ubuntu....

I think all this programming is coming up because I said that I was bored. Be careful what you ask for....

If I'm working late and haven't fed the cats yet, Zara comes to the door of my office room and stares at me. Okay, I can take a hint. For creatures without a common vocabulary, they sure can communicate well.

Local storm is, well, storming.

I'm going to study some Italian and then go to sleep.

Added: I bought a Windows desktop with the specs that I want (16 GB, SSD drive, 1 TB HDD). I'll just need to partition the SSD drive and install Linux.

Oh, and I was able to make an online rent payment by entering the check information each time. It's just when I try to access saved information that it barfs.

Everything that I've read on the Web says to focus on one programming language at a time. So I'm going to do a deep dive into Python and tackle C later. But the C class that I want to take will end at the end of the year, so I don't want to start it too late. Started the Python class.

I did do some unpacking. Go me.

Major cat fight last night. Apparently Mimi was mad that Zara was in the TV room. Mimi sometimes sleeps there during the day, but she sleeps with me at night. I don't see why Zara couldn't use the room if Mimi's not using it, but I'm not a cat. I hope that they won't start fighting now.

Woke up a little after my alarm at 10 AM.

The shower curtain rod came down, but I fixed it.

I looked at what movies are out, but nothing that interests me. Time to fire up NetFlix.

Started making a grocery list. Couldn't think of what pesto sauce was called. Kept coming up with "basil," which was the right idea but wrong word. Eventually the right word popped into my head.

A guy came by to bury the Comcast cables.

I have a little time to unpack boxes. Every little bit helps.

Zara didn't finish her food. But she's eating Mimi's food. Crazy cats.

Mimi was lying right outside the bathroom door when I took a shower. Her tail was under the door into the bathroom, so I grabbed it (gently, of course). She went "Hm!" and withdrew her tail.

Kitty drama. Zara was on my lap, but Mimi came over and stared at Zara until Zara got off my lap. Now Mimi's on my lap. Sigh. I need to get going.

Threw in a load of laundry so that I can test whether the dryer is working tomorrow morning.

Was going to go to the store after work, but realized that I can make grilled cheese and tomato soup for dinner. Or I can have fried chicken and mashed potatoes. The girls are low on food, but should make it until tomorrow.

It's raining. I hope that it stops before tomorrow because I have a bunch of errands to run.
days_unfolding: (Default)
Had problems going to sleep. I don't know why. I finally got up and had some milk and bread with jam. That did the trick.

Woke up a little after my alarm at 10:20 AM. Had some snuggle time with Miss Z. Couldn't find Mimi anywhere. Walked around calling her. I was making my breakfast when it occurred to me that Mimi likes lying on the wicker chest in the bedroom. Just then, she came trotting out from the direction of the bedroom. It doesn't explain why she didn't respond to my calling her, but maybe she was asleep. Or being a cat.

Got us all fed.

Freaking headache.

Zara was hiding in a box. I walked past the box, and felt a little paw grab my ankle. Goof.

Read some hints on being a good computer science student. Several people recommended studying C and Linux, which I meant to learn years ago. I found a C with Linux class on EdX. Need to do that and work on my Python skills. I'm also bringing my RegEx book home. I need to manage my time better.

I checked prices for my meds on GoodRx. Wal-Mart is a dollar cheaper for two of my meds, and more expensive for one. I don't think that it's worth the hassle of switching over. If I ever don't have insurance, though, Walmart is the place to go.

I'm going to fire up the headphones and do some unpacking.

The University of Colorado Boulder offers a post-baccalaureate degree in Computer Science as well. Its electives are in data science, which also interests me.

I looked through the Corvallis Visitor's Guide that I requested, and Corvallis sounds very, very nice. But expensive. "Goat yoga" was invented there.

Overslept my alarm slightly and got up at 10:30 AM.

One "Geek Squad" Facebook member said to take the Heartland programming classes to learn to debug in face-to-face classes and go for the University of Illinois Springfield program.

Nasty headache. Must be humid out. I'm a slow-moving vehicle today. Kind of dizzy

The New York Times has some great articles about Notre Dame.

Zara jumped on my lap during dinner, realized that I had finished eating, and promptly jumped off. Um, Zara, do you love me for me or for my food? She did snuggle with me for a while in the morning though without food in the picture.

Computer Science II is only offered in the Fall at Heartland. Bother. So I should take Computer Science I in the Spring semester. So it's looking like I need to take Calculus in the Fall of this year. That means a mad scramble over the summer to review math. And I need to take Statistics at the same time, but at least I used to be good at Statistics, which I wouldn't say for Calculus. Please send caffeine care packages ;) Now I'm thinking that I should take Statistics the summer after next. Then I could just concentrate on Calculus in the fall. I'd appreciate any helpful hints on taking Calculus.

I stayed late at work to make up the time that I spent sorting my classes. Mimi was upset and tried to take it out on Zara. Sigh

I'm making some TGIFriday's parmesan mashed potatoes to go with the fried chicken that I have. I'm going to freeze the leftover chicken and potatoes in individual servings.

I'm still not feeling great, so I'm going to go to sleep after that
days_unfolding: (Default)
Cleared taking Tuesdays as one of my days off in the Fall with my boss, and registered for Fall classes. it's going to be a little rough because I'll be in a Computer Science/Math class (Discrete Structures) and then a Computer Science class (first programming class) from 1 PM to 5PM with only a ten minute break between the classes, but it means that I will have to drive up to Normal (30ish miles away) only one day a week. Plus, it's simpler as far as work is concerned.

Now I need to apply for scholarships.

I need to decide whether to work Sunday - Thursday or Monday - Friday during the summer. Working Sunday would allow me to be available for chat reference for people on our Normal campus, but no one has been using the chat reference so far. Monday - Friday would be slightly better for our conversion project to Library of Congress Classification for our Reference collection. My boss left it up to me. And I'm not sure which I prefer. There are some advantages to having a day off during the week.

Little Zara has been following me around. She's been hanging out in the bathroom while I take a shower (and probably wonders what the heck I'm doing). She also needs to sniff whatever I'm eating or drinking. She's not trying to grab it, just sniffing. She's such a sweetie.

Mimi just jumped on my lap, making typing difficult. I need to go feed the hordes.
