Oh great. My microwave isn't working. The timer works, but the microwave doesn't turn on. Made my oatmeal on the stove.

I don't know why, but I'm really missing San Jose today. There's an atmosphere there that's like no other place.

Had a nice nap. Ate. Started the homework for class #2, and it is sets. Yikes.

Talked to Mom. She had a rough week: someone sideswiped her car and scratched it, her glasses broke, and her hearing aid stopped working. We talked about Christmas, and I said that I'd be worried about giving them the virus, and my mom said that my aunt was worried about the same thing. I said that it was weird not to be able to plan anything.

This is a boring weekend. Homework, homework, and more homework. I need to get the reading done during the week so that I can tackle exercises on the weekend. I'm done with section 1 of the homework. Now I need to read section 2, and then go to bed.

I forgot to mention the I had to relabel Alison Bechdel's Fun Home at work, so I pulled out my copy of Dykes to Watch Out For, and have been reading it in bits and pieces. It's kind of a lesbian soap opera and great fun.

The "pretty big" Loma Prieta earthquake in the San Francisco Bay Area was 30 years ago today.

I was at work. I was walking down the hall to the printer room, when the whole building started shaking violently. I thought that it was going to come down. I turned around and tried to walk back to my office, bouncing off the walls and getting hit by ceiling tiles. It could have been much worse, but it was scary enough. After what seemed like an eternity, the shaking stopped.

The phone rang. Someone else answered it and said, "It's for you." It was Erik (my ex-husband), checking that I was okay.

Erik called back a little while later. He was at work in Sunnyvale (? Or Santa Clara?), so he was going to stay there a while and let the traffic clear out. We agreed that I'd see him when I see him.

I took the bus to and from work. I wasn't sure that the buses would be running, so a colleague drove me home, which was very nice. The traffic lights were out, but drivers were being uncharacteristically polite.

I was a little scared at what I'd find at home. When I opened the door, I found a bottle of soda by the door. I didn't see the cats at first (they were hiding), but then they went, "Mom's home! Everything is okay!" I was like, "Oh ye of misplaced faith."

Amazingly, the bookshelves stayed up. (They weren't bolted to the wall.) Some stuff fell off of a bookshelf and broke, which I cleaned up. Erik's picture-hanging prowess was put to the test, and none of the pictures came down, although they had turned. The worst damage was a closet door that had come off its track.

The cable was out. The only radio station that I could get was in Santa Cruz, which had quite a bit of damage, so I assumed that there was a lot of damage in San Jose. (There wasn't.) I lay down on the bed with three cats draped over me, listening to the news.

Then the national news came on. I was still in shock, and it hadn't occurred to me that the earthquake would be national news. The news made it sound like the Bay Area was in ruins, so I went "Oh crap" and tried to call my parents. Everyone was doing the same thing, so all circuits were busy.

Erik finally got home, and we gave each other a big hug.

The next day, they told people to stay off of the roads, so we stayed home. My nerves were fried, and during one of the many aftershocks I said, "Stop it! Stop it already!"

I finally got in touch with my parents two days later. Mom came to visit a couple of weeks later, and she said that she wanted to feel an earthquake, and I snapped at her. (There actually were two aftershocks while she was there, but she missed them.) It took me weeks before I was able to go down the hall where I was when the earthquake hit.

I can't believe that it's been 30 years. Back to the current time....

I had lots of snuggle time with Zara. It's my late day, so I had a leisurely breakfast.

Urgh. The Bluehost guy told me to access the email to confirm the domain. I can't access the email, so that's the problem! I hope that we can get this resolved.

I was sitting on a chair with Zara on my lap. She jumped over my shoulder and onto the floor in one leap. I told her that she gets a perfect 10 in the Kitty Olympics. She amazes me.

I'm chatting with my dad via e-mail about IRAs. Scintillating conversation :) But I'm learning some things. It didn't occur to me to roll over my TIAA-CREF account (the higher-education version of a 401K) into a better IRA, but I should consider it.

Mimi was stalking Zara when I got home, and I told her to cut it out. She did, grudgingly, and occasionally she would start to wiggle her butt, and I'd tell her to cut it out again. Etc. Le sigh.

The conference went through the morning. I'm still processing the conference.

My friend Don did get back to me, so I'm going downtown this afternoon.

Had a leisurely lunch at Denny's and then headed downtown. I'm at the public library now, charging my phone.

My friend has had problems sleeping, so it looks like we won't meet for dinner. I told him that I'm going to head for the airport at 6 if I don't hear from him.

I didn't hear from him, so I headed for the airport. I spent slightly over an hour outside of the secure area reading. Then I started to get hungry, so I went through security. Note to self: travel with fewer electronic devices.

Most of the restaurants had limited food because it was 8:30 and they closed at 9. I finally scored a chicken-salad sandwich on raisin bread, which was good. I'm also in a good spot to watch the planes taxi and take off. I'm in no hurry to get to the gate because it's still two hours to flight time.

My friend called me around 9 PM. He had just woken up. We chatted a little. Now I'm at the gate.

On the plane. Surprisingly full flight for a red-eye. I did get some sleep, although there was turbulence and the person next to me kept on knocking into me.

At Atlanta airport, waiting for the Chicago flight.

Overslept, but still made it to the venue with plenty of time for breakfast. The walk is getting easier.

Had an easier time staying awake.

The conference is a collective as well as a conference, so there are a lot of people that know each other already. Feeling a little like a fish out of water, although the people are nice.

The Airbnb host said that I could leave my bags at the Airbnb tomorrow morning while the conference is wrapping up. Excellent.

Figured out how to get downtown tomorrow afternoon.

Had some delicious food for lunch, including couscous. Have to make some more.

Decided to not go to the social gathering tonight. Tomorrow is going to be a very, very long day, so I want to take a nap and mostly pack.

I'm debating whether to go straight to the airport tomorrow after I pick up my stuff. It would be boring, but simpler.

Hmm. I ordered from the 55+ menu at Denny's, and the server didn't question it :) I guess that I'm now old.

Trying to decide whether I should do homework and stay up late enough to check into my flight, or go to sleep. Sleep seems to be winning.

Woke up in about perfect time to go to the conference. Walked over (slightly over a mile). I've been drowsy this morning, so I think that I'll skip the evening reception and take a nap instead. I've been to the Tech before anyway.

The thing with (largely) coding conferences is that you get a 10,000 foot view of people's projects. Good for inspiration for starting your own projects, but not much info about actually implementing them.

Lunch was make-your-own-taco. Couldn't have been more messy, but it was free. Well, included in the conference fee != free, but it wasn't coming out of MY pocket.

Now I'm back at the Airbnb. I'm certainly getting my exercise; it's a slightly over a mile walk one way. And I'm going to walk to dinner later. It's nap time now.

I thought that I couldn't fall asleep due to all the coffee that I drank today, but the next thing that I knew, I had overslept the alarm.

Now I just ate fattening pancakes at Denny's. The location of the Airbnb couldn't be better with Denny's and 7 Eleven within walking distance.

Time to crash....

Overslept, but I should be okay. I just won't get a chance to have an extra bite to eat.

Running early, so I might still have a chance to eat "lunch". Amazing how much extra time that I have without the girls, but I'd rather have them, of course.

Had an extra bite to eat, and I'm still running early.

At the Normal station waiting for the bus. I got a nasty surprise in that people taking the bus no longer get free parking. The parking people told me to move my car to a cheaper lot, but I'll still have to pay $40. I'm glad that I got here early.

On the bus. Dozed lightly on my way to O'Hare.

At the airport. They're getting really strict about only two bags, so I had to put my purse into my carry-on. I keep thinking that I left my purse somewhere. I'm glad that it fit. Grabbed a bite to eat.

They gate-checked my bag because it was a little too wide after I stuffed my purse in.

Watched Bohemian Rhapsody on the flight with the sound off. I've seen it before, so it didn't matter.

Found the Airbnb after a detour when I turned too soon. The San Jose curse is still on; the heat isn't working. Oh well.

Didn't wake up early enough to go to the gym. Oh well. I needed the sleep.

Studied Spanish flashcards while I finished my coffee.

My library books are coming in. Good. Need to figure out which one to take to San Jose for those times when electronic devices have to be shut down.

The clothes that I wanted to wear were in the wash, so I cobbled an outfit together from my Goodwill bag containing clothes that I haven't put away. Came up with a pretty cute outfit, which I might also wear on the plane. Not that anyone cares what I wear, but I kind of do. My mom tells me that she goes out with uncombed hair (under a hat) and no makeup, but I'm not there yet.

I forgot to mention that the conference is giving us lunch on Wednesday and Thursday. I'll get reimbursed for food, but not having to spend money is easier. I'm trying to figure out what Pop-Tart-like or granola-bar-like food I can stick in my suitcase and won't cause a problem at Security. That'll be breakfast when I take my meds.

There must be people who prepare calmly for a trip, but those people are not me. I'm kind of stressy.

Fixing the boots with the floppy sole with Gorilla Glue worked quite well. Now I'm wondering if I should take them with me in case of a downpour. Don't really want to get my nice leather ankle boots wet. I'm watching the weather next week in Lincoln, Chicago, and San Jose like a hawk. Looks pretty good next week except for a wintry mix when I'm coming back from O'Hare on Saturday. (I take the bus from O'Hare to Normal and then drive home from Normal, which is a slightly longer drive than going to class because the bus stop is in the center of town.)

Printed off maps, directions, and the conference agenda. Trip is getting real. There's a reception on Wednesday at The Tech. I thought about going to Original Joe's afterward if I was still hungry (they're serving finger foods at the reception), but O.M.G. $15 for a sandwich? Are you kidding me? Jack-in-the-Box is still downtown, and that's more my price range. Also thought about taking an airport shuttle from SJC to my Airbnb, but holy cow. $45 to go about a mile (although Hwy. 85 is in the way, so there might be some routing around)? No. I found out how to get there via light rail. The only problem is that I'm getting in late. I might do my one splurge on Uber for that trip. (Which reminds me; I need to install Uber on my new phone.) It's promises to be an interesting conference. Geeky to the max, but I knew that it would be.

Just remembered that I have homework for class tomorrow. It shouldn't take long.

The road conditions are clear and Heartland is open. Ugh, there's a wind advisory starting from when I leave class. Maybe we'll get out early.

Nope. I need to meet the instructor on Friday to do the work for next week. And I have a lot to do this weekend. At least the instructor said that she didn't expect me to come in on next Tuesday, which will buy me more time. I can't believe that I'm leaving in a week for San Jose. I gather that it's been raining there. A lot. San Jose is having a Flash Flood Watch, Wind Advisory, and Gale Warning? At least it's warmer than here.

I'm fighting a battle with myself over going to the gym. I am tired and hungry. I considered going before work in the morning, but knowing me, I won't get up in time. I'm going to have to do it tomorrow, though, because I'm exhausted and I have some homework to do for my Adobe class as well as Spanish.

The car lock froze again, but the remote opens the door. Bah.

So. Freaking. Tired.
